NEW ZEALAND CUP.

FOUR-YEAR-OLDS IN RACE. V GOOD RECORD FOR AGE. (Dy “Spectator.”) Nineteen winners of the New Zealand Cup have been four-year-olds, horses of that age thus having a good record in the event. There arc 18 four-year-olds nominated for the race this year, and they include the mares Winning Rival, Anita Foe, Seronata and Classform. These four should run prominently in handicap races this season, and they have all shown staying ability. Winning Rival, who' was fourth in the Winter Cup, \ won tho Ashburton Handicap last Saturday. Promise as Hurdler. Lucullus Bay, who gained a first and a second at tho recent Awapuni meeting, has shown promising form in his schooling work. Minor placings marked his debut as a hurdler at tho Napier Park winter meeting. For Trentham. Sineo the Grand National meeting Haughty Winner has been in steady work at Riccarton and will race at Trentham next month. In the meantime lie may race at tho Ivurow meeting at Oamaru at the end of this month. Anita Foe’s Brother. A bay colt by Defoe, owned by Mr J. C. Edmunds, was recently added to, 11. Gray’s stable. Tlio colt is a brother to Anita Foe, and because of his size it is doubted whether ho will bo seen to, advantage till late in his two-year-old season. Miss Baffles Sold. Miss Baffles, winner of (ho Avondale Stakes on Saturday, was sold after tho race to the president of the Auckland Trotting Club (Mr E. G. Bridgons) for £SOO. Sho will remain under tho care of her present trainer A. Cook. May Improve.

Tho heavy going at tho recent Awapuni meeting may not have suited King’s Mark, who was expected to run well but could not do better than fourth on the Saturday after having every chance. Ho should bo prominent under more favourable conditions. A - >

Heidelberg’s Racing. Heidelberg is still eligible for hack racing, but will continue his career this season in open company. He has been nominated in the New Zealand Cup. Expectations are that Heidelberg, who is well forward, will win a good handicap in the spring. In the Wairio Cup last season ho easily boat Sparkle, winner of the Dunedin Cup. Royal Vision. Royal Vision,- a six-year-old grey gelding by Royal Picture—Confuse, figures among tho nominations for tho maiden event at the b'oxton meeting. Royal Vision’s name is also among the New Zealand Cup nominations. Ho has raced only sparingly, with six starts in the last two seasons, but his form has not been encouraging. Ho has also been tried as a hurdler. The Buzzer’s Return.

Tho Buzzer, who is in work, again at Awapuni and has been nominated for tho ■Now Zealand Cup, has also been nominated for tho open sprint at tho Eoxton meeting. Tho Buzzer started four times last season without success. His record includes an Auckland Cup win in 1937, second to Arctic King in tho New Zealand Cup in 1938, and third in tho Metropolitan Handicap to Padishah and Sovereign Lady. Bracket Fails. The Raker and Dunstan were bracketed in tho Ashburton Handicap but failed to secure a place. Both are owned by Mr W. J. Dore. Dunstan, as a three-year-old tho season before last, ran second in the Ashburton Handicap. He had his first race for nearly two years at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting in July. Dunstan has been nominated for the Now Zealand Cup.
