ASHHURST.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Kept. 17. On Tuesday afternoon the tenth birthday of the Mothers’ Union was celebrated. Prior to a social held in the Town Hall, a servico took place in the St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church. Visitors were present from Bunnythorpe, Kairanga, Woodville, All Saints’ (Palmerston North) and St. Peter’s (Terrace End). Members of the Ashhurst Methodist Ladies’ Guild were also present. The stage in the hall was prettily decorated with flowers. Rev. Mr Farnell welcomed the gathering, and vocal items were rendered by Mrs J. E. Hewitt. An amusing playetto, produced by members of the Ashhurst Women’s Institute drama circle, gavo muchventertainment-, the scene being the interior of a lending library. Those taking part were Mesdames R. Cook and J. Flowers. Misses M. Wilkin, I. Woodroofe, K. Brewer, A. Dobson and T. Walker. The attractive birthday cake, which was made by Mrs W. G. Romley and iced by Mrs T. Paton, was handed round. It was prettily iced, in blue and white, with ten-candles arranged artistically. The candles were lit by Mrs F. .S. Ramson, of St. Peter’s Church, and extinguished by Mrs ■ Dawiek, of All Saints’, and Mrs Paton, the oldest, member of the Mothers’ Union, ,cut tho c-ake,. A competition on jumbled flowers and vegetables was won by Mrs Ralph.
