There w^s also the very cdgentTeason for the rejection of these tenders, that if the Council had accepted .them, they would have exceeded by a considerable sum the amount afc. their disposal for the workreven if the Government had fulfilled its promise by paying over to the Council the £1000 grant m monthly instalments of £250. The Council, immediately after rejecting the tenders for the 310 chains, were, unfortunately, deprived of the services of their Engineer, and, consequently, a delay has arisen iti making tne alterations referred to, and calling for fresh tenders, which, though much to be. regretted, has been quite unavoidable. A meeting for the appointment of an Engineer takes place on the 21st June, when it is to be nbped the cause of delay will cease to exist. As to the three miles still unformed, between the southern boundary of the Kiwitea Riding and the finished portion of : the , /roact within the Manchester Riding, it is only within the last few weeks that the completion of the adjustment of accounts between the ridings has enabled the representative of the Manchester Riding to claim a further County expenditure within its boundaries, and up till now the want of a County Engineer has, equally with the other contract, operated against the work being laid but and offered for tenIn ; conclusion, let me assure the Kiwitea settlers that the whole Council, and more particularly, the Councillor for Atanchester Riding and myself, fullywecognise the importance of having the Kimbolton road formed during the present winter. We recognise that we have a common interest with the Kiwitea people m providing easy means of access to Feilmng, and nothing m our power shall be left undone to effect that object. If lam still as unsuccessful irimaking the above matters clear to any of those interested by the publication of this letter,; as it seems I have previously been with Mr Carr, I shall be happy personally to give any Kiwitea settler, on enquiry, what further elucidation of the subject it may be m my power to nfford.— l am, &c, - . v , .. ■■-.
