The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, JULY 6, 1878.
; At a late houi* last erenhig we received a long lettei-'from Mr Halcombe m connection vith the recent timber meeting. Weregret exceedingly hot oeing able to give it oriier-l-ion this issue, /particularly . as we, feel Mr Halcombe has taken the earliest opportunity since. his return, from. Waitara, to reply to the strictures upon, his action. A public meeting of the householders of Terrace End was held m Deard's Hotel last evening,- to take into- consideration the necessity for the -rectipn of a public school at that end of tha tpwn. Mr Warburton was voted to, the chair,' and resolutions were passed affirming the necessity of a school there, arid requesting the School Committee to bring" the matter before the Education k Board. ' A committee was also appointed to select a suitable, site.
The duties of Mr Ward at the Palmerston Police Court, on Thursday, were of an unusually light nature, beiug confined to one remanded, and a few trivial civil eases, which were all disposed of long before noon. JohanPrediger pleaded guilty to stealing a Bwag from the Clarendon Hotel; and was dealt summarily with by being committed to Wanganui Gaol for the term of four months. Constable Gillespie left with him m charge on Thursday night, and if was arranged that a constable from head-quar-ters should be at Halcombe to receive the prisoner, but the train was missed at Turakina, and, as a consequence, Constable Gillespie had to proceed thither, which prevented his return baok to Palmerston the same night. The long-continued rains have swollen the rivers m the district to an alarming 'extent. At the Borough Council meeting on Thui'sday Mr Piers E. Warburton was present, and drew the attention of the Corporation to the dangerous condition of the bridge oyer the Manawatu to Fitzherbert, which he stated had one of its arches choked up to such an extent as not only to flood the -adjacent land, but also to endanger the safety of the* structure; At the Lower Ferry the river has assumed the character of a rushing torrent, making the work of crossing by the punt one of difrlculfcy and danger; A few days since, the/ forge of the current was bo strong as to burst the gear, and sent the punt free on a voyage toward the mouth of the river. After considerable delay, and no small trouble, it was again secured, but certainly the office of ferryman m the present weather has been no sinecure. Our readers will be pleased to learn that the negotiation between Mr Watt, of Mar- . ton, and Mr Henry McNeil for the purchase of a property near that township has fallen through. Mr McNeil received a telegram a few days since stating that the land m question had been withdrawn from sale. This will be a matter for congratulation, as he is the stamp of man the district can ill afford to lose; moreover, he is anything but disposed to sever his connection with Manawatu, Where he holds ao many offices with credit, and should he do so, it will be a matter of necessity not choice. By the terms of sale he vacates his property on the Ist of next month, and unfortunately,, so great is the demand for land, he finds it difficult to get suited within the time. The Palmerston Sohool Committee held a meeting on Tuesday evening, but owing to it being our night of ''publication, we were unable to be-in attendance. The following were the resolutions . carried : — "1. Tliat the resignations of Mr and Mrs Collins be accepted. 2. That the services of Mrs Locke be accepted, as assistant teacher of the sohool. 3. That the Committee express surprise at the unfavorable report given by MrFoulis, as to the grounds and general arrangements of Palmerston North School. 4. That the compulsory clauses, Sections 89 to 93 inclusive, of the Education Act be put m force m the Sohool Distriot of Pal-, merston North/" The meeting then adjourned until Wednesday^ the 17th inst.. at 7 p.m. .'" ■■'■■■*"/-■■" A' • ;? Foxton was unusually gay, with a great display of bunting on Thursday. On inquiring the. cause, we found it to.be in houor of the marriage of Mr Kebbell, of Te Ran Awa, to Miss M. "Rae, of Fo.ton. Tbe joyous event was celebrated hi the orthodox fashion by a sumptuous wedding breakfast; after which the happy pair set out on their bridal tour. Perhaps there are few places whioh have grown with the rapidity of Woodville. It seems but the other day since the bush had to be felled m order to erect the first house, and now it numbers a population of four hundred. ,, The building at present utilised as a school-house has proved so totally inadequate for the number of scholars to be accommodated— -between , fifty r and sixty-— that the Education Board of Hawke's Bay have wisely determined to ereofc a building, suitable to the requirements of the district. In another column it will be seen that ten-.-ders are called for the exeoution of the work. Although thp ball ordered from Wellington nearly a fortnight since by the Palmerston Football Club has riot |yet arrived, m order that the members {should not be baulked (of 'practice to-day the committee borrowed one, kindly lent by the Sandon Club, for the oocasion. The goals have been ereoted, the ground levelled/and if the weather be only propitious a capital evening's sport may |be anticipated. It is expected that every member will roll up at two o'clock, when a scratch match will be played. There is nothing 'further to report arient the good ship Hyderbad. She still remains .inVthe i same position as. per last report, A gang of 20 or, 2s;. men left Foxton for.the scene of wreokou Thursday, who are to receive 10s per day and found, during their operations. " Captain Holmwbod left for Wellington on Thui'sday, and the crew .will . leave for the same place by the first steamer, when they' will be paid off. No tenders for lightening the vessel have as yet been accepted, but we understand that it is contemplated tp take out 300 tons without delay. ' *■''"" Avery smart shook of earthquake was experienced last night m Palmerston, at twenty-five minutes past ten. It appeared to travel due north, lasted for at least two or three seconds, and. caused a most perceptible rattle of the lamps m our office. : As a pill for Mr Cross, or a nut for our Wanganui contemporaries to oraok, we would refer to our shipping columns, where Captain Fraser reports there being sixteen feet of tauter on the Foxton bar. The Collector to the Manawatu Highway Board announces that he will attend at his office, Palmerston, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to receive the rates due to the Board.
We have been kindly handed the following letter, received by his Worship the Mayor from the Under-Secretary of Works, concerning the various resolutions passed at the recent meeting m Palmerston s — " Sir, The Hon. the Colonial Treasurer referred to the Hon. the Minister for; Publio Works your letter o^the.,2lst, of June, m reference to sundry works 'therein suggested to be undertaken by the Government, and I am directed to inform you that the same will .be duly considered." , With A loaded pistol at toub head you would not trifle with a footpad. Why then trifle with disease which is often as much to be dreaded as the ruffian who deniands " your money or your life" with his finger on the trigger. Eecolleofc that a cough is the harbinger of consumption, that a trifling kidney disorder may develop into , Bright's Disease, both considered incurable maladies. Apply the remedy while it is yefc time, and remember that Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Abomatio Schnapps is the best preventive.
