The Manawatu Times. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1878.
The first meeting of the Manawatu Highways Board, since the .recent election, will be holden at the office of the Board, Palmerston, on next Thursday. Messrs. Monrad and Linton, the two candidates, for the suffrages of the Taonui electors to the County Council, will address '■■ a public meeting on Tuesday evening at 6.30, at the public Kail. ' . It will be seen that Messrs. Halcombe [ and Maearthur address the electors of the [Manchester Riding, at Feilding on Sa^r-. f day, Stoney Creek on Monday, and Halj- | combe on Tuesday evenings. We find that m order to. give free rentilation to County matters m our correspon- [ dence columns, we have been compelled to ■ let our leader- go. to the wall for once. "It j is an ill wind that blows nobody good,'* and i the war which is raging between the sup- ; porters of the various candidates, takes a ; great deal of labor off of our shoulders, f nevertheless we will claim a small space m our- next to express our opinion, of the different candidates. '..- The following are the names of the team selected to do battle for Palmerston m the ■ forthcoming- cricket match, with Marton on Monday next j — Messrs. Staite, Charles, Pirani*Maaon, Mitford, Turner, Cox* P. Warburton, Soaton, Jackson, and Mountfort. The choice of captain has not been decided yet. * Our- Feilding neighbors, we learn, are der termined to put forth more than ordinary efforts to make their Annual Sports, on ' Boxing Day,, a success. ' A meeting is to be i held on Monday to receive the report and balance-sheet of the old committee, and to. elect an energetic committee of management for the coming sports. We understand that \ it is their intention to give away upwards of iJIOO m prizes. The C.K.B. Minstrels appeared at Feilding.on. Thursday night, and notwithstanding that the prices were five ahilUngaand three, so. great was the crowd that scores could not gain admittance. XXndw the circumstances Mr Simohsen threw open, the windows, m order to give those who had been' willing to. patroniat- the entertainment a chance of hearing something from, out- : side. The troupe appeared m the Foresters' :. Hall last night;, and from the vociferous applause-- with which they were greeted, we think they fairly realised all. the expectationwhiah were entertained of them, and we ; regret that pressure upon our space pre- ; dudes us from giving the extended notice ! that their merit deserves. They visit Foxton to-night, and we would recom.m«nd ou* friends at the Port not to miss the treat that will be presented to them.
