ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SPORTS.
A meeting was held on Tuesday evening, m the reading room of the Public Hall, Palmerston, for the purpose of taking some steps with regard to the Annual Christmas Sports, and also for the inauguration of a Jockey Club. His Worship the Mayob presided, and after having read the notice convening the meeting, stated for the information of some who were not aware of what had been done informer years, that the first sports had been held on tke Square, and had been a groat success, but m subsequent years a a division had taken place, m which individual interests were allowed to clash, exercising a detrimental influence, Mr E. Wakburtqh spoke at soraeler-gth upon the matter, pointing out that the Racecourse Reserve would be the most fitting place, and Boxing Day the best day, on which to hold the sports. He concluded by moving — " That the Palmerston Annual Chri&tmas Sports be held on Boxing Day, December 26th, on the Recreatiou Reserve, provided that the committee can make satisfactory arrangements with the Corporation." The resolution was seconded by Mr MiTJOED, and carried. Mr Coleman agreed with the action taken, and considered the next step would be to elect a committee ta carry out the necessary arrangements. With that view, therefore, he would move — " That a committee be formed for the purpose of carrying out the necessary arrangements m connection with jthe Palmerston Annual Christmas Sports." Mr Pices Warbttbtok seconded the resolution, which was carried. The following were then elected to act as a committee, with power to add to their number*, — Messrs. Snelson, Mitfoi-d, Cox, Linton, Hendsrson, Haynes, Keeling, Marsh, King, Jenssen, E.. Warburton, P. Warburton, Coleman, Akers, Moffit, and Goodisson. Mr Piebs Waebtjbton said that that matter having been so satisfactorily disposed of, he wished to bring forward another oi equal importance, and of a somewhat similiar nature. He referred to the establishment of a Jockey Club, He thought the district was fully matured for tlie step, and he felt convinced that it would not only meet the wishes of the settlers that such a body should be formed, but that they would be willing to come forward and liberally support it., He would therefore beg to move — "That a Jockey Club be formed, to be called the Palmerston North Jockey Club." Mr Coi/bman had much pleasure m supporting, and seconding the resolution, and would further move—" That a preliminary committee be formed, consisting of j~-Messrs E, Warburton, P. Warburton, E, Akers, W. Deards, and the mover." Tlie resolution was carried unanimously) and the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated tlie proceedings.
