From the Engineer, asking permission from the Council to do work for the Borough of Palmerston. ! SUSPENSION QF STANDING ORDERS. Cr. Snkeson claimed tho indulgence of tlie Council m having the Standing Orders suspended while he brought forward some ) matters which were of: vital importance to ' the Riding he represented. His reason for the request was that there was an impor- : tanb raeetirg. that evening of the Palmerston Borough Council, and as he had to preside it became necessary for- him to leave by the early train. The matters which he would ask to. have dealt with were m connection with a refund of the 50 per cent, to the various Ridings. The money had been voted at a previous meeting, and as. he wished to have all matters connected with his Riding settled at that the last meeting of the Council — as he would not sit again m it— he would mere the following three resolutions :— "That the vote of money paid by the Government to the Ejarere- Jackeytown road be expended upon the work, and that the Engineer be instructed to lay it out to, the, best advantage at once." " That £X92> the fifty percent, land revenue due to the Taonui Riding, on the 9th September, from the quarter's returns received from the Government, be paid; ever to the Manawatu Highways Board, to expend upon the road line from Fitzherbert Bridge to Fitzherbert. " That £193 of tlie land fund due to, the Taonui Riding, ending on the 9th of September, be expended upon the Karere and Jackoybown portion of the County road, and that the engineer be instructed to proceed at once with tlie work." That m tho opinion of this Council, the present system, of licensing ferry liouses on the West Coast rivers is bad, and consequently the livesand property of the traveling public are- often m considerable danger, and that 'at present this Council has no guarantee for- the proper cave of ferry boats &c. placed on such rivers at considerable cost to the County. 2. That m order to. remedy the evil this Council respectfully urge upon, tlie Government the necessity of charging tl\o full license fee of £30 per annum for license to sell liquors at such houses, m order that the County Council may Jlet said ferries, and pay a sufficient salary to competent persons willing to take charge of such ferries, and : become responsible for- property placed m ; their charge. 3. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the Chairman, and each member of the Licensing Board at Otaki with a letter requesting their earnest co-operation m securing better- ferry accommodation at the ferries referred to namely :. Waikanae Otaki, and O.hau. REPORT OE THE GRAVEIrPn? COMMjrPTEE. Crs. McNeil and Thynne handed m the following report with regard to the Council gravel-pit : — ."
