A GRAND DISCOVERY.

It has always been the firmly-rooted opinion of old settlers, and those who have been ac? quainfced with the district for years, that a loiv saddle existed m the Turamid Ranges opposite Palmerston, which would permit of direct coniniunication between that town sand the Masterton road, without compelling a journey through the. Gorge. Indeed that opinion has been frequently endorsed by profgijgioiial experts vfife whom ye h&vo

conversed upon the matter, and if there be truth m- 'the. .rumor generally current-jn town last ' night, accident has at length solved the problem, and put the matter beyond a doubt. It would appear that on Sunday a few of the survey party at present under the command of -Mr. ; Frank Knowles, working at the Twelve Thousand Acre Block on the Fitzsherbert side, determined to explore the country, for themselves, and not only succeeded m passing over a low saddle, but upon reaching the-other side oould distinctly see the plains of Masterton m the distance, no other high land intervening. It is only fair to say that our information is BBCond-hand, at the same time, backed asfthe probability of its accuracy is by the opinion of those thoroughly conversant with the country, we have not the slighest doubt of its reliability. Should such prove to bo the case, it is almost impossible to estimate its effect upon the future of Palmerston.
