MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.
[Thursday, October 28, 18S0.] Present — Wardens M'TCwen (chair) » Farmer, M'Pherson, and Gifford. MINTTTES. The minutes of previous meeting having boon ro'icl, the Secretary read the following correspondence : — MR. PRIOR AGATW. Still another letter was received from Mr Prior, re Roberts gravel pit, enclosing reply from Mr Ross. — Letter received. A REFUND. A letter was received from Mr. Jjhn TCnowles to the following effect : — With reference to an amount of £SS 2s f>d. epenfc hy the Govern ment m repairing the Man»wafu G-nrse Road, and which has been deducted from subsidies payable to your district, I am now directed by the Minister for Public Works, to state that a voucher has been sent to the Treasury for the abovs sum pav»Hle to your account," The receipt o? Mis le'ter. and a telegram confirming its effect, appeared to give satisfaction to the Board. ASKING FOR PAYMENT. A letter was received Mr. E. Buchanan contractor for some formation on Bank's "Road, stating that the work was now finished, anrl asking the Board to appoint some one fo pn*s it. Mr Gitfort) said the contractor had been spoking to him, and as he was aware that the Board had no Engineer, if he (Mr Gifford^ had had the necessary authority, he would have passed the work. Mr M'Phkrson snid the money for the work would come oub of the County Counc'l fund', and consequently MrHayns would have to pass it. The Secretary said he thought Mr Hayns was under a different impression, as he had said that the money could not be piid until the work had boon passed by the Highways Engineer. After some discussion authority was given to Mr Gifford to act on behalf of the Board, and with the County's Engineer, pass the work. THE STOPPAGE OF KOADS. At the last meeting of the Board a question cropped up as to the stoppage of roads, •nnd the Secretary wa9 instructed to write to the Government for copies of the Public Works Act, 1880. In reply, three copies were forwarded, with an intimation that it was not usual to give them gratuitously to local bodies, but they could be obtained m any quantity at the published price. THE PROPOSED SEPARATION. Mr "Farmer said he thought some action should be taken with regard to the delay m carrying out the proposed division of the Ward" : He would beg to move — " That the Secretary be instructed to communicate with the Government, and urge upon it the necessity of declaring the new boundirißS without further delay. " Mr Gifford would second the resolution particularly as he knew the ratepayers m his district were getting rather impatient. Both the Chairman and Mr M'Phsrson lnarfily supported the motion, the former intimating that a? the division wna to take pines, it wan well that it should be made ! wit li out delay. Several accounts were then passed for j payment, and Board adjourned.
