MALICIOUS BACK-BITING.
TO THE EDITOE. Sib, — In your last issue I read some remarks from you m the meeting of : the Borough Council, when the appointment of Mr. Graff as ranger was under discussion. I cannot understand how you, Sir, who always was a, oha.mp.ion of opennes* and fair-play, should set the ball of malicious backbiting willing m a Council o.f experienced men, and let their decision, be influI eincod thereby. You stated yourself, " I have heard serious charges," &c, and then m your wake follow several of the. others— ; " Oh, yes, I have heard complaints ; yas, I have have also heard," &c. Now, Sir, I am not great friend of Mr. Graff, brt I should like to see fair-play, especially as he is unable to defend himself. What; are your .serious chtirge3, and who brought them to you ? Dp you.' not think that any, serious charge against a man m Mr. Graff's position would not have been brought to., light long ago? What is really the truth about these complaiats ? for there ia always fire where t.b*re is smoke. . r Ji*c truth is* that Mr. Graff has-Tery : di3agrrfßeble duties to perform, and that he cannot please every. Some of the Scandinavians, who have known him ever since,, he i came, he^e,. . years ago, perhaps expect some lenieucy from him, and, of course, =g»uttible- ; ' when tliey find him ron«oientious ! The truth i» that ha is performing his duties m a fair e,ns \mp.a^ift\ fta.r f^

The editor of tKw paptr made no remarks whatever about "Mr. Graff, and certainly did not set " the ball of malicious back- biting rolling." He" merely published statements which were made at tho Council meeting byCoun* cillor Dungan, and endorsed by two other Councillors. If Mr. Jorgeswn is under the impression that the editor, is accountable for the conduct of Councillor' Dungah, he is very muc|i^mistaken. "They ire two very different «nd distinct; p»c*6n», and certainly the above attack had Jbetter he»n levelled »t tho real culprit. ; W«: 'iayis^hpwT : ever, published Mr. Joi-gensen's letter is it was forwarded to us, leaving i£ to Councillor Dungan to reply to the strictures upon hU ; conduct, should h« think fit ; and from our slight knowledge of ■ that gentleman^ wa imagine he willhaye a few remarks to make m reply.— Ed.
