Bryant & Co. have five men and two drays at work,; I am sorry to say Bryant met with a seriqjis accident on No. 6 Contract, by a fall of earth knocking him down and breaking his collar-bone, and other hurts. This has delayed his contract quite a week. M'Coll ha-* twelve men and four drays on his several contracts, and is progressing very" well with his works: Nathan has again slaved his contract ; he has five men and two drays at work. j Together with Mr. Marchant, the Chief Surveyor, I walked tbe wholo of the road lines, m the 70CO-acre block, , where bushfeliing was carried on under supervision of tbe County Council. We also walked ovei the new f-jmation contracts. He seemed very much pleased with the. "whole of tbe works and the way they are being carried ,out. ; V ,- : Y 77 vh^Y!" j According to the Chairman's instructions, I for warded to the Surveyor-General a report of progress of works m the Kiwitea,' and received a letter from him which I attached hereto. • ' ■-■' "•'' ' - • . MAIfOHESTEB BIDING;. , The 'road's tire m very, good order, ijxcept that part of Mangaone Koad that it formed only ; no works bther t»an' repairs being carried on m this riding. I. have started to widen the County Eoad at Awapuni by filling m the ditch. Mr. Eotherham has assisted m thig work by rua-
ning down some 200 yards of stripping and metal for tho work. J placed my men on to fill m the ditch and sprcadZthe' 'motel. This was a most dangerous p>t|Vqf road, there being only gome twelve feepbobween railway platform and a large unsightly ditch, I would ask the Council to urge upon the Grovernment that another £50 is'required to complete the bush-felling and clearing on the Fitzherbert Boads, to open tho road throughout from Manchester Highways District to 'the Native boundary to south of Fitzherbert. OROUA RIDING. ' . --- Only repairs been done : m this riding during tho month. The roads aro m very fair order throughout. KAWA KAWA RIDING. I have, still the three men on the SansonCarnavvori Boad doing some of the worst parts. I have also had some slight work done to the drift-sand on County Boad, near five mile-post, so that people can travel over same. ■ This said sand now covers tho whole width of the road. Montieth and Dove aro making good progress v it'll, their contract of formation on Sanson- Carnarvon Boad.; Denton has not done much to his work at present,, he only having ono man on to clear lonje scrub, &c, off road line. ' I would ask to be allowed to call tenders tp repair, the County roaSithroughlbush at: or noar Sanson. Thia |»quires, say, four inches of metal spread om£ same, and if to be done' should be p.utjjpPhahd at once. AWAHOU *Ki»Era. * According to : ; yp uf instructions; " I haycalled tenders for metalling Avenue Boad j at the same time have to call your attention to the increased railway charges for carriage of road metal, which will greatly increast* the cost of road-making where metal is required to be conveyed by .railway. Rosenthal has completed his contract of formation qn Avenue Boad. HOROWHENUA RIDING. According to your instructions I. went to the Horowhenua Block on the sth of October, and measured up the whole of the bush-felling contract, and on 6th mado but vouchers for payment. I visited the road lino cut by Mr: Garkeek ; he is also stopped by Natives at Waikanae.ahaving cut the lino to tho Native boundary.' If yon wish this line to ba forced through, I must ask for an authority foX Mr- Oaf keek to survey the aforesaid block to Waikanae. *• BRIDGES AND FERRIES. ,"Pho whole of tho ferries aro m good workinsf ordar. I rode to Bulltown and interviewed Mr' Thomsj-e Scott's ferry, Bangitikei Biver. He stated that, to the best of his belief, there wore no ferry charges posted up jit ferry; also that Mr. Scott had signed an agreement with Bangitikei County Council to work ferry .ip a proper manner, as I take it, the same as all other 'ferries are worked, and scale of tolls is understood to bo same as other forms' V Mr. Thorns promised^ to bring the question of the working of this ferry before the Bangitikei County Council a.t it's ne^t; meeting. ' According to. Chairman's insfructions, I attended tbe Ferry Committee meeting, at Feilding, on the' 18th day of last month, and took notes for drafting a set of Condition* for Lease of Ferries.
