THE WEST COAST RAILWAY.

Feom: a private letter received from Wellington, from a gentleman m a position which constitutes him an authority, we leara that there are excellent prospects of a company obtaining such, concessions aa will wavrant it m pushing on the construction of the Wqst Coast Railway. It appeals that a few gentlemen — of whom Mr. TfIAVER9 was one — waited on Mr. Bbtce, and wished to know if it were the intention of the Q-overnment to purchase from the Natives all the land through which the line would run. The Native Minister replied m the negative, when tke deputation asked if the company could have the services of Mr. At.exa'S can M'Donai/d to negotiate vrlth the Natives for the land through which it would pass. To that Mr. Eryce responded that the Q-overnment would be done with Mr. M'Donald's services m a bout thr.oe. weeks, when possibly the company would he able to make private arrangements with him, but that otherwise the Ministry were most anxious to place every facility m the way of furthering the project. Considering the very great success which has attended the negotiations of Mr. M'Donalo with the Natives, there can be little doubt that tho comp:inr will only be toa glad to avail themselves of his sai' vices, should ho be kindly disposed to act, of which wo have little doubt. There appears to b« an idea that it is contemplated only to construct the line by nid of the company as far as Porirua. but we sincerely trust such will not be the case. Ws feel ccn vinced if that step wovo taken it would result m "failure, as it would be found not to pay, and the consequence would be that more permanent injury would be done to the ultimate extension of the line than if it were never p-.oeeadod. with at all.
