A DANGEROUS PLACE.
TO THE EBITOE. Sib, — If you are at any time travelling past the Cemetery, you will notice that some person has of late removed the covering from off tho bridge which used to lead to to Mr. Hayns's residence, and which was erected years ago by the proprietor of a sawmill. I don't mean to say that this particular bridge was- of any use to the public, but I protest against the manner of its re- ' moval, as after enquiries made, I find that the Borough Council has not removed it, and I infer that no one else could legally do so without its orders and sanction. As tha bridge was situated on tLe centre of tbe public, highway, consequently it belonged to the publio. Tho great eyesore and danger arising from stripping this bridge v patent to any one (as there is a deep gap left being a portion of the old ditch which I think should; have been filled up by the contractor who was paid for it long ago) and not left for another expense upon the Council. There likewise remain the stringers across the ditch which I suppose were not considered worth removal by those who took the sawn top away. These pieces of- timber are enough .to causjß any horse, to shy while passing, and the close proximity of ths dangerous ditch on the opposite. side makes this particular spot exLreu^ely risky, and if allowed to remain will surely cause accidents which may prove expensive to the Borough Council who are certainly responsible for any sunh accidents occurring from neglect on their part. My only object for bringing this under younr notice is tha^ this matter may be attended to without delay by the Engineer m whose charge it is, and the danger complained of removed as speedily as possible. I would at the same tirue % ljlk,e to know whether any private person can remoro any construction fro.m, a public street without having first obtained the sanction of the Public Body under whose care it is for the time being.— Yours &c. A. Ratepayer.
