SPECIAL MEETING.
The Council then adjourned, and resolved itself into a special meeting called by advertisement to consider the advisabilityor otherwise of granting the six feet of Main Btreet, asked for by the Government. THE STATION BTJII.DINGS. A communication from Mr Gray, Seoretary to the Post Office, asking for the'specific consent of the Council for the encroachment by the proposed new Post Office six feet on" Main street. Councillor DxnraAir said that although the Government had granted .every concession asked for by the Council, there bad been one item whioh had been overlooked, and which he considered a very serious matter. It was proposed that the new extension should project some six feet further on to the road than tbe present buildings, and he thought the least the Government might do, would be to run a false back the wholelength of the station, and flush with the addition. Councillor M'Nbil agreed with tbe- re» marßs made, for not only would the projection have an unsightly appearance, but it would be very dangerous. Still he would not wish to throw any difficulty m the way of the Government. Councillor BATOHBLAB was of the opinion thnt if the work wore carried out as set down m the plans, it would have » very unsightly appearance, aad prove an eyesore to the Square. He would suggest thnt the leave should be given, and the attention of Mr. Stewart might be called to the matter. Councillor Mowibm did not think it politic to refuse the consent, and His Wodship thought the Council was m a manner pledged to the concession, beside which from the liberal way m which the Government had acted there could be but little doubt that all the matter wanted was to have it brought under the attention of Mr. Stewart to have it rectified. k Councillor Fbbotson m order to bring tbe matter to an issue would therefore move — "That m consideration of the Government making the alteration asked for m the plans of the new Post and Telegraph Offices, the resolution passed by this Cdunoil granting the six feet on roadway at meeting held on 7th of December, be now confirmed." The resolution was seconded by Councillor MowiiEM, and carried.
