The ■Anniversary Races.— We have been asked to intimate to our country and oth«r readers tliafcin consequence of the Annivei'Sfi'iy Rwces.^to be holden 7 :next iSaturdny, the usual weekly auction at the People's Mart will take place on Friday, when MrjSnelson wilt offer , several articles of i urnifcbre, f6wlß--&e.- •■■-■- - 1 .\ The Eairanga Block.— At the last sitting of the Waste Lands Board, plans of the Kaniranga r .Block - (Palm eraton ;' and Fitzhefbert) with a schedule of prices for cas\i atwl dj&ferred' -payments comprising 109 i sections, .were submitted ;- -and;Afe. ? w ; a§, resolved thafi"Bo of /them should! for iale by public auction, at the TowajSall, Palmerston, on Thursday, lb.'e' iFfth- 3?eb. next, and that the remaning ,29, subject to" the approval of the Governor, be gazetted as open tupurchase by application on deferred payments, on Monday, the 21st of Feb. next, at the Land Office, - Wellington, and the Town Hall Palmerston. The Manawatu Highways Board. — The Clerk of the . HighwaysBoard has received an intimation fvom the under-seeretary that the Government has appointed Monday the 31st instant, t\«e day ' upon jirhich. the .pew .. Manawatu* .Highway Board will hold its first meeting. We understand that a petition is to be forwarded to the Q-overnment asking it to nominate either Mr Perry or Mr Bryce to- thevacant Wardenship of Kjwitea, and it is .more than possible that' the recommendation will be given effect to before tlw day of meeting. The Perry Tolls.' — Mr. j. Sowry, late member of tho Waipawa County Council attended'atthe meeting of the Manawatu County Council, as a delegate from the people of Woodville with rtgard to the scale of tolls which had been prcposed to charge on the Gorge Ferry. After some considerable discussion n. reduction wts made, but the decrease did not reach the the old standard. The scale as revised wit be advertised m our columns, but as will be seen from our report, while the Fotton Perry is only to be leased for three years, the Gorge Ferry is to be let for seven years. Coroner's Inques;.— Piers E. Warburton, Coronor for the district held an inquest on Monday, afc the Cheltenham Hotel, kept by Robert Staart, on the body of John Scott, who had been found dead on the previous day. The deceased had been indulging m a heavy fit of drinking, and while suffering from its "effect!, put an end to his exi3tenre by drowning. Although there was no evidence to show that Scott was actually deranged at tho time of his death, the jury took 1 hat view of the matter, and brought m a verdict of " Suicide, while m a state of temporary insanity." _T.'ie deceased, who was forty years of age was a native of Kent, England, was unmarried, and had no relations ih the colony. > Starting " before they were Ready. — Wo are very much afraid that tht newly constituted .Sandon and Carnarvon Highway Board has made a mistake at tht outset of its career. Before a new board can hold a legal sitting it is necessary that no; only the wardens should be duly gazetted, but also that the day appointed for the first meeting should also he notified m the Gazette. We have heard upon good authority that the'new board did not wait for the second condition to be eprnplied with, not only held their meeting, but elected a chairman, aritl"*transacted other business.. We trust-thal such is not the case; ; for if so, we fear the proceedings which took place thereat will be ; illegal. The Accident at the Brewery. — The parties interested have been hoaxing the " other pnper " and making it a cat's paw to contrudiot out< paragraph, with regard to the accident at the btewery. Ws iar« always m a position tb' ; pr6'v© our statements, and the report published m last issue was furnished to one of our staff by no leis a person ithan J.jCrabtreo; further Crabtreeiias since, aaksd. fcfrat wewojald not contradict the denial m "the other paper," -but as we cannot see why we should bear ■ the brand of unreliability^ we-litaVff declined to do so. We are alwajfly willing? to -withhold anything "whose" publiention .might cause annoyance orpfttn, but going to "another paper" getting ifc to publish a ,false. staement, and striving to make us put unworthy of credence, is not the 5 way to enliit our sympathies- or gain that end. / The t adies* IhirsQ.— Tb.e subicriptions being raised .or collected by the ladies of Pal^neraton Tor a Ladies' Pursa at the Anniversary' Races, will m. all prabability reach £20. It haJi ,been suggested ' to us, md the prbpoiitibn- is a good oh», that jglg ihould bo set down as the prize for .the rac«, and the remainder should be set apart ! wi a trophy to be giv«n to the rider of tlie winner. It is more than probable that but few owners, will ride their: own 'hories, -and consequently the bestowal of a trophy upon 1 the gentleman rider who may - steer the winner, to victory will be.a grac»fuliacknowledgeinenl W« understand that the* sum already ooi'ected by the. fair canvassers is already considerably over half the above mm, and ai the manner and method of its appropriation is in' their hands, we throw out the hint for their acceptance or otherwise. * .._'.... Backward Progression.— As we f eared j and is might har«- been -expected, ;Mr Mflcara ha§ got tired'of -running a, daily coach to cariy the nmils between Wellington and Foxton, m the face of the most y determined refusal on the part of the Government to pivehim n penny m compensation. We have so repeatedly, urged upori the people Wellington and the West .Coast to - band together and bring sufficient prssuro :to compel tbat"«mall meed of justice, th^t pur exhortations and arguments have become' 'almpjb Stereotyped ; still no peace should jbe until ithe concession asked is grautoi. JPis~Bomething monstrous 'that our stalled economical Sfovernment sWuld expeid £2000 m the funeral obse^ quies and building of a mansolenm for. ' a Maori Chief, and refuse a subsidy of £400 >to secure a mail which would prove a boon to thousands m town and country. Here at one f»>ll swoop £2000 has been given unauthorised, vhich would, pay ;i)he subsidy: for five [years, nut when those who. pay the ta^es arid cor, tribu|e to, the wealth- of the. revenue, put forward a claim for mere justice, it is nontemptuo.un\y .ignp.red.. : , : Wilftll Distortion. — In a r«cfnt [•I'M «? th« #wsififti* Mmwte w %««•?•-

tion was made tint an officer of the Manawatu Highways Board had stated that Mr. Macarthur would select & representative for the Kiwilea Ward m the Highway Board, for recommendation to the Q-overnment and thereupon an onslaught was made upon that gentleman. Wo have Mr. Hoe's au thority for saying that the paragraph is moat ungenerous,' uncalled for,; and without a vestige of truth. During the past week he was 'raiding m the Kiwitea Block, and in 'conversation with Mr. Bryce the question of the? appointment of a warden was . touched upon, when Mr. Bryce said be did not see'how the' Government could select a representative, as but few of the settlers ..were.kj?o.wn to it. . Mr. .Hoe_ rejoined thatin that case,i,t wa? jus^t possible the Government might apply to the County Chairman to-recommend a- suitable - wafdenT "The"' opinion was neither official; nor positive, bub merely supposititious, and the outcome of an ordinary cojiversation, a very different i matter from the way m which it has since ] been represented. A Juvenile Turpin.-^-Oir Saturday Constable G-illespie received a telegram from Constable M'Nulty at -Foifcon, announcing that a boy named Conrad, thirteen years of ajte, had ab'scoTided from, that town, ; tnking with him a horse, saddle,-and bridle belonging to.,one,<)f the settlo/s^. Thinking .that the youngster would make for the Napier oountryjthe Constable-rode to the G-orge/jbut ' upon reaching the ferry being satiated that he was on the wrong track, he "retraced his steps towards town. His hor» haring*qa»fc a thoe, bhv. enTistable. alighted at Wood's? blacksmith's" shop to have: it' replaced, md f while there obserred the object of his search quietly jogging by. Of course a pursuit and capture ensued, when the youngster while admitting-thafethe horso was not his, insisted that its owner had given him a loan of it:— From- inforW^n^hieh^onstaßle Gillespie received, he discovered that Conrad had tried hard to dispose of the animal at Carnarvon on his" travels. He was dispatched to Foxton by the night train on j Saturday and the 'stolen property returned to its owner on' Sunday, but although there is a clear case of horse stealing to be proved, we imagine, on accqnnt. of. .his. extreme youth, other steps'will be. taken with him. Handicaping the .Country. — There appears to be a.some.what peculiar arrangement amongst the fire insurance companies, with regard to accepting risks m the country — at least it 'is so- '.with the South British. Some few days ago Dr. Bockstrow wrote down to a friend m Wellington to insure his house for him m the South British for £500. Not hearing m reply, and being anxious to have the matter completed, he went to the local agent of thecompany, and did so, paying 15s per £100. Next day he received his friend's letter informing him that he had carried out his instructions and had insured inthe.South- British for 7s 6d per £100. The doctor then made application to be released of the policy upon which he had paid the larger sum, but to this the company declined to accede, but cancelled that effected m Wellington at the smaller rate. The arrangement is an extraordinary one, and by no means fair to country agents, for it is not at all likely that if risks can be taken m Wellington on country property at 7s 6d, insurers will'not care to patronise local agents and pay 15s. The only explanation vouchsafed to Dr. "Rockstrow was that lijs was the rate ..ruling m- .Wanganui, and the company could not break through the rule.
