NEWS AND NOTES.
School Committees.— ln ano'her column will be found the result of the annual school committee elections for Palmerston, Jackeytown, Taonui, JEarere, and Stoney Creek, which, no doubt will be of interest to our readers. The Palmerston Cemetery.— We would again remind intending purchasers of burial *il es that Mr. Fred. Mowlem will be ut the Town [fall to-day to mnke arrangements on behalf of the trustees. .He lias "also asked us to notify that country and other settlers can register their dogs at the^game'time. ■■■-.- . *:-' " " Tried to Get Away. — Evidently the season for bolting is net yet over, for yesterday afternoon a horse attached to Mr. Collins butchers cart, while standing opposite a store at Terrace End, made a determined effort to get free. Strange as it may appear, the result of his first plunge was to liberate himself from all harness, but luckily the reins being tied, and finding that check upon him, he changed his mind, and deferred his gallop for another occasion. The Borough Valuation. — The Town Clerk has just concluded his valuation of the Borough, which we are pleased to see has this year reached £13,766, against £12,531 for 1880, being an increase of £1235. This is a matter for congratulation, as the increase m the valuation represents the improvements made m the Borough during the past year. Unimproved sections have not been mci eased, as property generally, though not probably lower m value, cannot be said to rule much higher m price than last year. - ■ Professor Haselmayer.— From a private letter which wo received from Napier, we learn that it is more than likely that Professor Haselmayer, the world-re-nowned Wizard, who is now astonishing the people of that town, will pay Palmerston a visit, on his way to Wanganui. The Home papers admit that with the exception of Robert Houdin, the Professor has never had an equal. Should he travel this way, such a display of conjuring may be expected as will be worthy of patronage. The Georgia Minstrels.— As we expected these popular popular favorites had a bumper house on Saturday night, the hall being crowded from stage to dooi\ This gave the company heart, and the consequence was that their eccentricities knpt the audience m one continued roar of laughter. The programme was judiciously interlarded with several choice ballad selections, chief amongst which were the duett, " Larboard Watch," "Out m the Cold," and "Alice, Where art Thou." The troupe showed m FeilJing on Monday night, and appeared to be highly appreciated. The Pot Calling the Kettle Black. — I" it- 9 Monday's issue the " other paper " pats itself on the back and dilates upon the progression of journalism, as exemplified m. itself. It sneers at the Feilding paper because the County Engineer's report did not appear until Saturday, wuile it. published it on Monday. That is true enough, but th<9 puffing editor forgot to state another half column appeared on Tuesdny, a third on Wednesday, a fourth on Thursday evening, and the whole put together was no!|a portion of t'e three columns of small type wnicli appeared m this paper thirty-six hours earlier. And this is progressive journalism, and the blessings of a dnilv paper about which we he?r so much. Four d«-vs to publi.sh n rep'- 1 )'!-, truly this is something to crow ab<>iU. We imagine the puffing eclilori3 sorry lie broached the sub^ JBL-t. The Palmerston Gold-fields.— The sixty pounds of stone brought m from the veef was .rushed on Saturday, by the steam button' rigged up m connection with the Piilrner.-ton Saw Mills, and we are pleased t.<> say the result has been ruost satisfactory. Mr. Jensen kindly called at our office, and shower! us the proceeds of the test. It wus a mass of stuff about the size of a sovereign, -but scarcely half that weight, m which small cakes of gold could be plainly discernible with the naked eye. It has been calculated that if the mass were all gold, and as it is the proceeds of only sixty pounds, it would run somewhere about four ounces to the ton. Making all allowances for dross, however, it may safely be said that at the lowest estimate the yield has been two ounces to the ton, and this, with the great facility for working the reef with water power, should pay splendidly. As might be expected, the enterprising shareholders m the company are jubilant at the result. The Palmerston Court House. —A full month has gone by since Mr. Johnstone telegraphed to his Worship the Mayor, that tenders for the new Court Housb would be called for m a few days ; and it is a fortnight since Mr. Linton was told the very same thing by an officer of the Public Works Department. By referring to our back papers we discover that it is just eight months since the Government notified its intention of endorsing Judge Hardcastle's report, recommending the erection of the building, and still not a plan has been issued or a plank of wood placed upon the ground. We ask — Why is there any delay ? Has the Minister of Justic|e been hoodwinking Mr. Johnstone, or has Mr. Johnstone been humbugging us ? Is the department fooling us, op can the slightest faith be placed m the word of Minister or official ? Everything may be all fair and square, but considering all the apparent shuffling which has been indulged m, we very much doubt it. We have, however, determined to refer to the matter from issue to issue, so that we will shame the Government into carrying out its repeated promises, or openly show its falsity.
