PALMERSTON NORTH SCHOOL TREAT.
The annual treat in connection with the Palmerston School was held yesterday afternoon, and as might have been expected proved quite an event for the youngsters. At an early hour the children assembled in Mr. Beale's paddock, kindly given for the occasion, where, under the superintendence of Messrs. Snelson, Coleman, James, and Haybittle, a lot of racing and athletic games were got through. Mr. Francis had his " Merry-go-round" on the ground, and the committee made arrangements with him for it during the evening, so that the youngsters who did not care to compete in the sports, either sat in their carriages and looked on, or did a circular journey upon their wooden steeds. Quite a number of the parents and other visitors were present, and the excitement upon the results of tbe various races was not confined to the juveniles alone. No little amusement was caused during the scramble for lollies, and Mr. Snelson, by whom the "grab" was given, was several times in danger of losing his equilibrium, as the mass of small humanity upon its " all-fours " ducked in an out between his legs like a swarm of ants. The following are the events competed for : — 100 YARDS, FOR BOYS UNDER 14. H. Dawick ... ... ... 1 John Mowlem ... ... ... 2 150 YARDS, FOR BOYS OVER 14. H. Dawick ... ... ... 1 G. Lucy Richardson ... ... 1 Alice Grace ... ... ... 2 There was a tie between Alice Grace and Mary Anne Richardson for second place, but in the run-off the former won. QUARTER MILE OVER ONE HURDLE. H. Dawick ... ... ... 1 G. Richardson ... ... ... 2 QUARTER MILE FLAT. H. Hayns ... ... ... 1 J. Armstrong ... ... ... 2 100 YARDS ON THE SQUARE. G. Richardson ... ... ... 1 W. Keeling ... ... ... 2 SMALL BOYS, 100 YARDS. J. Mowlem ... ... ... 1 G.Lyons ... ... ... 2 GIRLS' RACE. Alice Grace ... ... ... 1 Mary Anne Richardson ... 2 The boys and girls were then marched into the Town Hall, where Mrs. Watson, assisted by several ladies had a substantial tea prepared for them, to which their late exercise enabled tham to full justice. After the wreck had been cleared away, Mr. Snelson, in the absence of Mr. Linton, the Mayor, who was away at Napier, distribated the various prizes, of which there were upwards of ninety. These were given to none unless those who had passed in a standard, or had merited reward for good attendance. Considering the late hour at which the proceedings terminated, we have been compelled to hold over the list of prize-takers. The ceremony of presentation was witnessed by a large number of lady visitors, who seemed to take quite as much interest in the proceedings as the parents of the little ones.
