Donijervptter, Nocheinmal " and the JBrofessor bounehed out of the room, and was far, far awnr before the Aldermen had half recovered from t heir astonishment. Now, whenever I hear "m court, m camp, m grove," anybody speaking irrelevantly or very wide, of the mark, I invariably fhout m the echoing depths of my inner consciousness " Vot der Tenfel lias dees to do tnit de Noo Qeeny Egspeedeetsehena P" NOTICE. Under " The Licensing Act, 1873," "The Licensing Act, 1873, Amendment Act, 1874," and "The Licensing Amendment Act, 1875." IVTOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN L\ that the Quarterly Sitting of the Licensing Court for the Palmerston North District will be held m the Court House, at Palmerston Nortfi, on TUESDAY, the Ist day of March, 1881. All applications for Transfers, &c, of Licences must be lodged with the Clerk the Court., at Palmerston, m duplicate on or before TUESDAY, the Bth day of February, 1881. Dated at Palmerston North, this 28th day ot January 1881. ARTHUR S. B. FORSTER, Clerk of Licensing Court. N.B.— On this Ist of March the Court, will be adjourned until THURSDAY, the 3rd of March, at noon. TO THE PUBLIC OF MANAWATU. «. Facts are stubborn things, while words are cheap, m fact cost nothing. We might follow the silly example indulged m by some journalists (?) and make a series of announcements that one week we had a circulation of 1000, the next 1200 ; the third, 1500 ; and so on, but would the public believe us. We think not. The Manawatu Times is now five years established, and for nearly three years was the only paper published m the County, and although we admit — for it would be nonsense to deny it — the advent of other journals at Foxton and Feilding has prevented the large increase m its circulation which the progress of the County would have given it, still its circulation at the present time is larger than before either of those papei's came into exis. tence ; and it has a pretty large number of regular subscribers not only m those towns, but m Sandon Carnarvon, and on all other outlying loads m the County. As we before stated, we do not intend to make silly boasts for people to luugh at, but we say First, That the Times has a guaranteed number of regular subscribers one h.UHdred and fifty to two hundred m excess of any paper published m Palmerston. Second, That its circulation m Palmerston alone is one hundred m excess of any paper published m Palmerston. Third, That beside its larger circulation within the Borough, we give a dis- | tinct pledge to prove by our books, that we j have yearly subscribers all along the Foxton Stonej Creek, and Rungitikei Koads ; the towns of Foxton, FeiMing, Sandon, Bulls, Marton, and Wanganui. Fourth, We are prepared to take the numbers printed each issue for the past month, making a statutory declaration as to their correctness, if any other journal will do the same, and prove that we have a hundred and fifty of a majority m circulation. That is the way to let the public know which paper has a genuine, and which a brummagem circulation. If this challenge is accepted well and good j if not let us then hear no more boasting which is as useless as it is ridiculous. We claim to have a genuine circulation — from year's end to year's end — distributed all ovor the County, and we are prepared to substantiate the assertions made above by allowing an inspection of our subscribers' books ; we dare the paper which asserts that it has a circulation of four hundred and fifty to do the same, and if it can show subscribers to within nny thing like a hundred and fifty of that number, then we will give £5 to the Pulmerston Hospital. /GRATEFUL. — COMFORTING EPPS'S OOCOA.
