THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
AUCKLAND, Last Ntght. The San Francisco mail steamer, City of New York, on her arrival signalled for the health officer, and consequently Dr. Philson boarded her. The captain reported that Bmall pox was prevailing at San Francisco and Honolulu, but m the latter port only atrong the Natives. There had been been four cases of measles amongst the children, of whom there are twelve onboard, but at present only two of these are convalescent. The first case broke out on the 12th and the last on the 25th ult. One occurred before reaching and the other since leaving Honolulu. One death occ.irred on the passage. The Rev William Conden died of dysentery and gereral debility, and was buried the following day. Dr Philson m accordance with the regulations, but contrary to his wish, decided that the vessel must be quarantined, and the mails, fumigated, accordingly she steamed away towards dusk to ftfotuhihi. The Customs launch went down to her to assist m landing the passen ;ers and fumigating the mails. The New Zealand passengei's will be quarantined m the Southern portion, and the mails will, after having been thoroughly fumigated, be despatched by the Penguin tomorrow.
