I have discharged brie roadman m this riding, and the remainder are now stationed as follows :— One-man) on! .the Kimbolton Road from Ashurst road, to end, half time m Kiwitea and half time m Manchester Ridings/ One man from Ashurst^ road, to Awahuri, arid from Feilding to Malcolm's mill. There are now only equal to two and a half men on. the road m this riding. 1 have again called tenders for additions to Kawa Bridge. The roads m this riding are m excellent order throughout the metalled portions. I have called tenders for leasing the County Reserves, Rangitikei Line, ;•-';:,;:*■,. oboua Btpnro. I .have dispensed with the services of one- of the men m- this' riding. The roads are m very good repair. .The tWo bridges (Makawai arid r Pibkatob) w riear Sanson aremarritten state, — The Idakawai Bridge should be renewed a. once as the stringers are rotted off at the junction with the sills, and also upon examination j 'the stringers proved "to be more orgies* rotten thoughout. I have had shores erected, under the stringers until I receive instructions from the Council to! erect a new bridge. The Pickatoo Bridge is not so far gone as the Makawai, it being' .^nderrstrutted, there is not the same amount of strain on the strainers. Both these fridges are 30 feet m length, and therefore t not chargeable to the riding, hut to the bridges and ferries account.* I -have' called' tenders for the various works authorised by this CounciL The various contracts are being proceeded with,, (except Penny's and Tai po Line. ) The K akariki Road work is finished but requires final inspection before the cheque is paid over to the ontractor. : Moritieth has asked for an extension of tinae, JVwbuld recommend that he be granted say six weeks,- as„the -weather has been so dry it was impossible for him to plough the ground. KAWA KAWA BfOIKQ. Matthews has finished his. contract of metalling on _ the Sandon- Foxton Road. Other- works m the riding are progressing favorably. I have called tenders for . various works m this riding, authorised by the Council. I have occasion to suspend T. Chine, on atjeount of his neglect-
ing his work, and shall* dispense with his services when I pay him bii cheque. "' . AWAHOU RIDING. If athan has commened his contract on Avenue Road. -Henderson has nearly completed the metalling on Tramway Roadt^l am serry to say some delay has occurred m the. erection of the Awahou Bridge through- the** non-delivery of timber. I ordered the .whole of the timber I 'thought necessary %r the erection, but upon taking .the old part to pieces it was found to "be rotten, and other .timber; had to ieV ordered to take its place. Un account of this Ifie delay has occurred. _•_-... Y7J HOEOWHEMOA RIDIISr*. I have' instructed' J. Gobtei- to ido certain metalling repairs to the road through Otaki, both to the approaches to bridges and to a swampy place.on the south side of the township. BBIOSBS ANb TKBkIES. Nothing has been done at present by .way of rejiairs to the Manawatu Bridge. The ferries are'all' in good working order throughout the connty.- I have had certain repairs done to the punt at Ohau. This was rendered necessary, through tbt punt being built Of green tiin,ber, and the seams opening bat so much occasioned the punt te leak.
