AN EXPLODED " SQUIB."
TO THE S->IT*B. Sia,— Feilding ."Squib" is dead, and to all appearances gone to. partake of what measure of glory awaited him. Is it possible* that Palmerston is likely to ■ produce its ** Squib ;" judging from appearances, T think so. - You may of late have noticed some queries': m the['Staaditrd about our Borough cart, and our jrespected Engineer. This is mknyopinien ;a "Squib," and oniy intended as a stab m the dark. I trust our Borough Council will shew its accustomed good sense (if jtbis 'matter is ever brought forward by Councillor Coleman, or any other Connsillor) by setting its face against meddling- with; .inch .paltry matters;a¥Jhis. I think bur Mayor will know how to dispbseof such business m his; usual tray; ior, lam much mistaken in' my man. It would be a great pity if any siich attempt to sow discord m the Borough Council Was, m the smallest measure, successful. The '''ratepayers' ; iri, Palmerstbn are too well satisfied at present with our Council arid its officials, ia be tioo'd-wirikei by any such dodges' as ; ' those referred tr*. It is well known tliat* m certain quarters there is a grudge against our Engineer, hence the " squib " about the Borough cart, &e.&c. There ought to be ample room for anyone's abilities here iri advocating the wants ;of this district, and showing its capabilities' for' settlement ; this would certainly 'do us all good. But instead. of this. -being 'the- main object of sbme persons, it appears to me that they glory in,.decrying both people and ' parts of : the district m, .which they reside. I trust that-tbe people here will not be led aside by : any such tricks. ' Tbey have m the -past,, shewn their intelligence by sticking together as one community, and iby that unity they have progressed at a wonderful pace/ this should be still their motto io spite of any attempt on the part iof those j" Squibs," who would.; glory m bringing about discord m our Council and amongst our ratepayers. — I am, &c, /:7;7 ' riRATEPATM No. 2.
