It is desired to set forth iv a concise form information respecting the business which this office undertakes: — The Public Trustee is an officer specially appointed by the Government. 1. To take charge of all kinds of money bonds such as Marriage settlements, moneys to be invested for the benefit of Minor-, moneys bequeathed for charimble objects, moneys, the title to which is m dispute, or whose lrgal owner is unknown, or cannot be fouud, &c, &. 2. To administer the wills of all persons, who by a pointing the Public Trustee as their executor secure the guarantee of the State for the due fu film- nt of their wishes and avoid the risk consequent on the appointm<nt of private persons as ex< cutors, who not iinfnqnently, though earnestly desirous of acting for th ben fit of parties interested, fail to car y out legally the objects for which they were appointed, and conscqucntl} 1 involve themselves and tho-e whose interests thty are striviii; to protect m costly and harassing litigation. 3. To take one administration of all estates of w hioh no disposition has been made- by will, wheuever relatives do not wish to injure the responsibility of administration, or cannot from any cau-e obtain the necessary powers to act. Fn such casrs it is the duty of the Public Trustee to discharge all legal debts so far tie assets extend, and divide the residue .amongst the next of kin. 4. To take charge of, and grant 'ease of all lands lying waste and unoccupied of which the owner is unk- own, or who has been absent from the Colony for tin years having left no known agent.
