FOUR PERSONS KILLED.
MELBOURNE Tuesday. ■■ A serious accident occured this morning on the r Melbourn« and Hawthorn Railway, near Joliment. A tire of one of the wheels broke while the tratn was proceeding between Richmond and Joliniont, when the engine and all the' carnages left the rails at the station gates at the latter place. Some of the caiTiagea cap•ized, and. four passengers were killed and a number injured. Tbo following persons have .been killed, viz.: — Mr. Garret, a'Baptist''minister,' of Brighton ; Mi-.-Jameson, a law clerk; Mr. Bail ier, the publisher; and a laborer, whose name is unknown. The following are tbe name* of the injured;-—Se/ionaV/; Ifessrs BHss and Lyons, both auctioneer^; slightly injured: Major G-eacH, Mr. IFosbury (of the Crown Law. Office), Messrs Elmstie, Stephen, Renwick, and otkerg. -~ ■ - ' Later. 1.20 p.m. The train which met with the accident this morning at Jolimont was the express from 'Brighton to Melbourne. The:disasfcer occurred at 9 a.m. "When the train ran of£ the line, three carriages were hurled over an embankment into a swamp; one, a first-class, was'smashed to pieces, and the other two were over turned. The pa««engers were extricated dead from the debris of-the first class carriage. •; The scene at the place of the disaster was most distressing,and great excitement prevails throughout the city and subrubs i over the occurrence. The following additional names of injured passengers have been ascertained: — Edwards, "Wright, *nd Edwards. \ ; .....'..; . .'.'.'. 10.30 p.m. The report of Mr Stephen's death has been" contradicted. He is stilt alive, but the doctors' hold put no hope of his recovery.
