SPECIAL OFFICE. THE PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE OF NEW ZEALAND. A LTHOUGH this office has been m f\ existence for a period of seven years, it is believed that the objeGts for which it was established are not sufficiently known or understood. It is desired to set forth m a concise form information respecting the business which this office undertakes: — The Public Trustee is an officer specially appointed by the Government. 1. To take charge of all kinds of money bonds such as Marriage settlements, moneys to be invested for the benefit of Minor*--, moneys bequeathed for charitable objects, moneys, the title to which is m dispute, or whose legal owner is unknown, or cannot be found, &c, &. 2. Toadminister the wills of all persons who by appointing the Public Trustee as their executor secure the guarantee of the State for the due fulfilment of their wishes and avoid the risk consequent on the appointment of private persons as executors, who not unfrequeutly, though earnestly desirous of acting for the benefit of parties interested, fail to carry out legally the objects for which they were appointed, and consequently involve themselves and those wbose interests thevare striving to protect m costly and harassing litigation. 3. To take out administration of all estates of which no disposition has been made by will, whenever relatives do not wish to iucure the responsibility of administration, or cannflt from any cause obtain the necessary powers to act. Tn such cases it is the duty of the Public Trustee to discharge all legal debts so far the assets extend, and divide the residue amongst the next of kin. 4. To take charge of, and prant lease of all lands lying waste and unoccupied of which the owner is unknown, or who has been absent irom the Colony for ten years having left no known agent. State guarantee is secured for tho safe cu<tc dy of all monies placed m the office. The cost of administering estates is very small, fn formation may be obtained from all ageuts. R. C.
