THE WELLINGTON WOOLLEN MANUFACTORY.
\We have . before., us-.as, copy of the -prospectus, for- the proposed Wellington, Wool? e^Manufa(CtOTy. The directory is targe, and among, the names, are most of the influential ;men m the district. The success of the, other, manufactories haye, enicouraged; incited: capital^ts . iv, the | Wellington . district. to,enibark,in ,the venture, and* use their influence m the formation, of a company. The . f opmep s , has made . the jmoye, an# we^fcave. no .hesitation, in isaying that -Manawajm will ere.lpng if olio win her. wake. The succe.B,? of 'the Kaiapoi, andMbsgieliOompainies, ■proves that the .article .manufactured iin'the.Golony, is superior to imported tweeds as- a, rule, This is proven beyond- doubt, b,y ; the large, and increasing, demand: fpr these gopdi— iindeed/it instated .that a 4 reafly sale .for* i^e^j', tildes, the, qu^ntit^. at 'pVesep^Cm.axiufiaicture'd; be.ef^ J fectfedi. ; This^of^cdurse means that the c^lbfiial 1 made" article must e,ven T tualiy take the place .of theimpprbed aiticle. The. Wanganui. people, say there. is, no, district. «Q- admirably J adapted to the .manufacture of these goods as theira» but; w.e.thinb that were the question put. to the,^blic, the verdict would ',be in.fr^qr,,qf..Qur district.: From; would) sufllce tp, put the/eopjipftny aflpa^j arid there, is no dpub.t at. »il tha4 tl^is 'amount cquld^ be, easily ■raised^. .. but ,the. . quesiion^ wJiich ; naj;urally, ftrise.s^s, hpw is the ( ,e3.pital tp.be>ais.ed?- Oiirjb.eply is, let. the pea.ple. m the. dis.trici; eousider. the matter,, seriously, and we venture to predict; that ' nine ;btit of ever/ ten, would arrive" at the conclusion, that the only element we. require ty, en sure, success is unanimity. The main feature is, that the inhabitants should see. in.its true sense, the, great a#7sntages which would^ of necessity aec'rja^, to themselves through the formation of such a compsip^.in their midst. When, the. Wes^Qoast Eailway shares w,ere being, offered, few could : b,e. found? who refused to take, them, and we would' ask* why was this so ? It. was,, Mip.ply because the inhabitants of the district dearly saw the great benefit, which the con-
struction of the line wouhi confer upon every individual m this part of the country^-the farming people, and^ large landholders m particular. But would the icdnstruction of the raiV way "be a greater boon, than the •stablishment of such a company of which we tpeak ? We , think nqt; The time has arrived, when we mustdevbte most particoUr .attention. to. our djf a Resources. We want energy,._an4 ufianimity] of opinion, and all dMcultiesvre »oon overcome;" As an instance of this, we have only, to review the actions of the Manawatu Bacing Club recently. A few, weeks since, it was supposed that it was an impossibility to get up a race meeting, and this by resolution of a general meeting held for the purpose of taking public opinion on the matter. But we now find, that through the energetic actions of a f«w gentlemen, that we have not only secured the race meeting, and hare good prizes to offer, but m the end the Club will have a good balance to carry forward to next year. This was the result of energetic mens' labors, and the unanimity of public opinion, And so, we maintain, the end- we hacKe- m view could be attained. We shall say more on this mpst important question, m a. future, issue, but at present would; commend the. subject to all thinking men.
