Ip another column we publish an advertisement relating to the Old English Fair which opens at Feilding to-morrow. , Tec fcenery, gs"ar,'&c,is tliat which was j used so successfully at th'e W'j.nganui Fair m aidpf the Fire Brigade's Funds, and we understand every effort is being made by the Feilding people to ensure thp success of the ii flair. We are requested to intimate that a special train leaves Feilding for Palmerston to-mor-row 'Wednesday) night, and also on Saturday night, at 10 o'clock, so that pesrous going from Palmerstcn will be able to return the same venirig. ' We hope the Fair will prove thoroughly successful. We understand that the Government propose to take 80 feet of laud from one side of the Square, and 40 foeii 'from the oj-hn** making a total of 120 feet, to enable "them to increase th'e railway station accommodation. When .tin's is taken, the gap between the two remaining portions" of the Square wiU be about 30Q feet, that portion '"'being occupied by ' roadway, -shunts, enginehouses, goods sheds, &c. Under these -circumstances it will be almost a farce to call the Square a breathing-place. When the traffic increases 'by the Wellington and Napier railways coming m to Palmerston, still more ofthe Square will have to be taken for raiiwaj sftieds and eventually what was destined tc* be a beautiful promenade, plan Lie", with trees," will become a huge railway station, filled xv'ith smoky engine-houses, and goods shed.' - Well, let us hope that by that time'- Palms*-stoa will have advanced sufficiently "to' he able to have a Square m some other part' of the BoroUgh, which will prove a recreation ground, and not an unsightly gag, as ithe prose yt one is likely to become. At the inquest held, yesterday it trans"pi red that, thedeccaseJ Henry Gardiner was aged" 63, and was the father of six stin*s* and ' three daughters. In connection with tlie late a'ceident we have been requested 1, to cull attention to the •wi etched 'state of Our hospital arrangements. Tt appears 'that Dr Harvey, after finding that Gardener was quite idcad, ordded the removal uf his body to the" old hospital, and' ori' arrival there the door brcl to be forced, in-' It is certainly to be regretted that "a town ofthe importance of .Palmerston is not yet m p-s^essum of a" well-organised institution '"if this kipd, and that although a large , sum is annuallyipaid by the district" fer hospital maintenance it gives towards the support of one which is at such a dis** ;tance a *ay as to render it practically useless to ns. Messrs llalcombe & stock sale takes place to-morrow. The Taonui School treat will be held to-morrow. ■'.•■'- The Wanganui. Herald says : — An interesting matrimonial case is shortly to occupy the attention of the higher courts m Wangauui." Af slibrttime ago a marriage was celebrated, iv which it now seems the young gentleman who led the innocent biide io the marriage altar gave the registrar an imaginary name, while bis mother entered into the plot, atid passed herself off as his aunt. Whether the young lady has grown tired of married life, and welcomed the /discovery of a broken link as something ' to; he 'utilised rumour hath it not, but some interesting revelations are expected. '* A London telegram says M. Gambetta was, it appears, wounded m his attempt to prevent his mistress shooting herself, m consequence of hi? refusal to recognise their natural sou at his 'legitimate heir. Bis death, however, resulted fr^m an o'd intestine complaint.
