THE CLERGY'S "SCREW"IN ARREARS.
At a meeting- of the Wellington Diocesan Synod held "on Thursday, the Treasurer reported that the qlergy stipends up to 81st December, 18.81, were still m arrear to the ex-, tent of £743, while the sums due from parishes and parochial districts amounted to £524. From a return furnished it was disclosed that the. following parishes were m default to the* extent of the sums set against the name of each:-^-Wangauui Town, £75; Carterton, £72; Lower Hutt. £65 ; JPatea, £62 ; Palmerston, £58 ; Matfcbn, £50; Hawera, £41; Bulls; <fee, £29 ; Karori, &c., £25 ; Wanganui Country, £20 ; Greytown, £20 ; Featherston, £3. It was further stated that the hank account was overdrawn £24. A long discussion ensued on the unsatisfactory state of financial affairs disclosed by these figures, and several members freely expressed their opinion that unless more energy was displayed by some . of the defaulting districts it would be necessary to withdraw their clergymen. It was resolved that the {Secretary direct the attention : of the defaulting distriots to their heavy arrears, and request immediate payment,
