THE Manawatu Times.

SATURDAY, FEB. 17, 1883. CO-OPEHATION IN FARMING.

" Words oio things, and a dtop of Ink falling like dew ttpon a thought, produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think. '

When will onr farmers learn the desirability, nay the necessity of cooperating m the manufacture of butier and cheese? For years past this subject has been kept moving m i the3e columns, and yet nothing -seems to result. Will no consideration of profit or expediency rouse the dairy farmers from the slumber in*which they are wrapped? Cooperation is proved to be the most profitable and the easiest way of working a dairy farm. The experience of farmers m America and m New Zealand as well proves that. Every cheese and butter factory started m this colony so. far has proved a thorough success j m some S cases the success achieved has been I astonishing, notably the Ashburton ■ factor-/. Some months or so ago, I when butter was m these districts down to .sixpence per pound, the Ash burton factory was receiving 600 -ga'lons of milk per day, and some .of the cows made m the first month £2. Taking a real good dairy cow, giving 401bs of butter or 120 gallons of milk a month, the comparison would be :— 4olbs of butter at 6d, 431 ; 120 gallons of milk at say Bd, £1 10s. Bat by co-operating the fanners may realise 4d (or even more), givi ing £2, allowing the skim milk to | pay for the trouble of making and ! marketing the butter. Then look at I the amount of labour the farmers I would be. eased of m the way of churning, *&c, besides which they would draw the money every month for the milk. Our farmers may depend on it that m sticking to the oIH beaten tracks they are losing money. As we have already said, experience teaches that, co-operation is the way to make dairy farming pay well, '
