The traffic n turns of the Wanganui Kaiiway tor the four w.eks ending 3rd March, show the total receipts to have been £3,588 Gs 3d as agdust £3,311 for corresponding period of previous year. . • Our smaller local bodies are frequently m sare straits f"r want of money, and more often than not they are indebted to the banks. We presume that tbe llalcombe Tow n Board .is no exception to tbe rale, aud is acquainted with the Bank through the medium of an overilifr. But even if it is, it must remember that the County overdraft takes recedence of others, and it must cheerfully submit to be kept out of money which 1< gaily belongs to it. Otherwise it will get no g' ants for works, even if the ratepayers have been contributing Ito the County funds for half a doz:n I years. At last meeting of the Council, ! m reply to Or Linton, who asked that (ho license fee belonging to the Ha! combe Town Board should be refunded to it, the Chairman stated his desire to hold the ma'ler ov^r till nest meeting as it was necessary io keep down the County j overdraft, After tli t meeting the fee , would be refunded, less cost of electing licensing Committee &c And yet there are people who are rash enough to assert that the Council does not come up to time iv its payments ! It is possible, but not cry probable, that while deducting the election expenses, the Council will also allow the Board interest on the •money it has wrongfully retained for some months,

At yesterday's sitting of -the Qhxirch of England Synod at Napier -the whole afternoon waß occupied discussing a petition to Parliament, praying for grants o Jenouanali nal sen <x.a, and for Scriptural teaching m 6be State schools. The Rev Mr Fitchett, of Dunedin unfolded a scheme the essence of which consisted m the abandonment of educacation by the State m centres of popula« tion, the existing schools to be handed over to the different denominations td. work. In scattered districts the Government were to carry on the schools, rating the ptople of the district for their support, the Government merely to examine and certificate toachers, to put aside a sum, cay, £5.0,000, to be awarded m scholarships, ja'nd to. enforce $ com- 1 pulsory attendance. All children whose j parents could not pay school fees, to be educated free. • v : An interesting case has just been concluded m the Sxtprerne ' Coui t at | Hokitika. At last meeting of the Oama.ru Harbor .Board Mr Shriraski objected to payment of an account for expenses m entertaining, the Governor on his recent visit. The Board,' however, passed the account, and Mr Slirimski threatened to ".sue the Chairman. ' It is not always safe far a solicitorito rake up unpleasant matters when examiuing a witness. At a recent meeting of creditors held m Auckland the debtou was subjected to a s.evere examination by Mr Brassey, arid at the conclusion thc- . debtor went fur the solicitor ia,fter the fashion adopted by pugilists, ' . At Auckland the other day. Sir William Jervois told tbe crowd that had gathered together to receive him that as tbe sun was rather hot they might all venture to put on their hat. If the Aucklanders had assembled to meet Sir Ar-hur Gordon we fear many cases of sunstroke would have been recorded. The canny Scots of Iluuedin were hoaxed on the Ist April with a report that a whale seventy feet long had been Stranded ou the beach at Lawyers Head, j .Numbers went out to Bee the leviathan, but of course there was not even anything " very like 4 wha.le" there, and the consequent profanity is said to have been shocking. It would appear that young ladies down South experience great difficulty m bringing the courage of their loveis up to " popping point . ' At ]£aitangata, the other day an enterprising dflftisel invented a new method of accomplishing this, but all did not end well. She attended a party, for which ehe had "prepared some of the eatable's and m one of toe cakes it is said she pi iced aquanfcity of alum. Shy selected thU cake for her own consumption, and after eating a poifcionofit declared bcr-self poisoued. The telegram does not say whether the young man supported her m his arms m this dire extremity, bat we presume he did, as the affair created great excitement. The matter-of-fact enquiries of the police have however since dispell'd all the romance conuected with it We trust the young man has by this time " told his love," but trying to make the course of true love run smooth with a dose of alum is a novel idea for the romance-writer of the future. The bridegroom has arrived at tbe manly age of 19 and the bride owns to 25 summers. On Sunday afternoon, after the open-air meeting m the Octagon, a procession of twelve or fifteen person's, iuciuding some men and on woman, fell m, and marched to the barrcks, singing a hymn by the way. Several people have Lai the army badge on their breasts for some days. The larrikins make the indoor meetings very rowdy, but now a sergeant and constable keep order. It is now an admitted fact, and the Public testify the genuiness of the assertion, that nowhere m tbe district can be had the same value m Drapery and Clothing as at M'DowEtr. Bbos., the Cash Warehouse. Their imports this Season willl be on a much larger scale to meet their rapidly increasing business. — Ai>vt. j A paragraph stating that an Auckland drunkard was found to have £692 m his poclcet, when arres ed has goue the rouu's ol the papers. He has gone a goo.d deaV out of his way to say this, and we .can only express our regret at having lacerated hi,s feelings by publishing the truth. With aliltle further training at the hands oftheChaurnau the rate colleetex would make an equally admirable censor of the press. ,' .''._■-. Constable G-illespie had quite a busy time q£ it to-day.
