Whitecombe, Commissioner of Crown Lands, has furnished the Taranaki with ihe following particulars relative to 'the perpetrator of the fearful tragedy at Dunediu, during the time lie was m New Plymouth : — " George. Timothy Stephenson came to New Plymouth m March, 1875. He was often at the Laud Office inquiring about land. He said that he came Up from Otago, that he had been, m |a bank at Cromwell (the Natiqnal ( l think)' but' that he did riot like' desk !work. and had thrown it up, ( and !waa then interested m some' quartz reefs, whice turned out pretty well. He, however, intended to turn to farming, and wished .to take up laad m this district. After looking about, he took up 66»> acres m the jlVToa district, viz, sections 95 and, 97, ' '2b's acres for cash, sections '41,200 acres on deferred payments, m his own ' name, and sections j94, 200 acres, iuthe name of his wifp ,Ma'rv Bly'the Stephenson, as was allowed by the " Taranaki Wsste I and Act, 1874," then iv force. He went out to the bl ck.aud remained ! there some few months m a whare, Hooking alter the felling of a portion ; of the land. I believe he then told me that he was going to Dunedin to. fetch up. his . wife and child. |In 1876 he returned here, told me | that his,, wife would, not jeave , Dunedin, and hated, the idea of farming and bush life, and that he ■should have to get rid of his land.
