THE WELLINGTON-MANA-WATU RAILWAY.
The directors of the WellingtonManawatu Railway evidently intend losing no time iv pushing on the construction of the line, and now invite tenders for the Palraerston section. As it was found that the heaviest work had to be done at the Wellington end, the directors wisely decided to have that carried to a certain stage before inviting tenders for the more'easily constructed portion, and by adopting this plan it is expected that all the sections will be completed at nearly the same time. The wisdom of this course is almost self but* as' certain misstatements have, been made it may be as wejl to point out that if tenders had been called far the Palmerston. section at the same tim* as for the sections at the Wellington end the result would have been that a large portion of the Company's capital jwoukl have^ been locked ■ up for a term m such a manner as. to produce no return, for the railway cannot be expected to prove- rernu« nerative till carried right through. The chief engineering difficulties being" at the Wellihgton end it was necessary to overcome these before proceeding with the construction; through the level country, and as tenders are now called for the latter "we may rest assured that the day is not far distant 'when. the district will have railway communieas tion with Wellington . ;
