To the Editob. Sir, — I had no conception that my innocent speculations would raise such a tempest as has proved to result. As you are aware, m ray previous letters I did not specify the name of any paper, but it appears that the cap fitted your local contemporary to a nicety, and he at (nice adopted it m his usual graces ful style. I trust therefore that, you will allow me a little space on this occasion, as it is certain tly to the public interest to know whether a paper fills up with bogus advertisements or not, more particularly when that paper crows iib-mt an en-< largement " m consequence of pres* sure upon its advertising space.'.' The Standard now c'ainis that it is the paper which I said was crawmed full of "dummies," and 1 think there is little iloubt that my statements were, as a whole, perfectly correct. It cannot surely be asserted f >r one moment that the advertisement abaut the Native Lanl Company's Bill, or the Manawatu Produce 7 ace, or the Atmospheric Gras Engine, or the Billiard Tables is genuine. I could mention a host of others, but these are sufficient. Ex pude Herculem. I am prepared to present the editor with £sfor every genuiue advertisement (bar one) m the long list, contained m my former communication, on condition that he forfeits a modest £1 note for every one which is a dummy m his paper.
