v SVords are things, nnd a drop <if ink fal'ing like dew upon a thought., pro'.lri.:es thi>t whi n h makes thousauds, perhaps millions t.lunfc."
Ratepayers m tbe Manawatu Uoad District will be glad to learn t lat la*t evening the Chairman of the Manawatu Boad Board, Mr Engels, received a letter frotn Mr W'Jeon, M.H.R., stating that Majiir Atkinson intenfls biin^inf! down a Bill before the end of the session wli^uh will give effect to the prayer qt the pefiton recently forwarded by enabling the Board to resume its own valuation. We direct special attontion. to the alterations made m Mr I) Pringle's advertisement now appearing. Mr Pringk 1 , we, observe, has just opened up ani marked a large consignment of saddlery, comprising saddles, harness, spurs, bridles and all the gear that goes to makeup a well-assorted stock. Those who, desire • to procure a good article cannot do better than pay his establish" ment a visit. An offer of 12s 6d m the £ has been Accepted for Croskery's estate.
Uaine's Graud Panoiama of the AnKriuan War will open for a three nights' season m the Foresters' Uall m the 18th inst A special feature of the entainment is a most liberal distribution of presents. The Panorama itself ha« also been highly commended by the press. Messss J. Liuton and T). H.MacaTthur returned last ovenioji from Wellington Mr Linton informs us that another length of raiiwaj work at this eiul hasjbeen let, but as the papers are net yet signed neither the name of :he contractor nor the amount can be made public. Orders are now being taken m Palmerston for Professor Monson's Treasury ol song, a handsomely bound voI lume, which contains numerous selections from the most celebrated com~ posers m the wo?ld. The volume is very highly spoken t;f m musical circles, as the following letters from Wellington will testify :--" It is very evident that the Treasury of Song has been compiled by one who thoroughly understands the requirements of the many. The work will doubtlessly re ceive what it rtally merits, viz., a very large circulation. Hautriu West, Prof, of Music, Wellington June, 1883. 1 have bad great pleasure m looking ov°r the Treasury of Song, for the home circle, and believe that'il will te found a mot pleasat aud instructive work for private homes. The selection from (he books of ibe masters, both vocai and instrumental, is particularly good and certainly not too difficult. I have no doubt the work will find a host of subscribers, and, m course of time, will be found ih the musical lihray of every family circle. W. Raymond, Teacher of Music, Wellington, N.Z , Upper Chuzuee* street, 22nd -June, 1883."— The work has also been very favorably commented upon by musicians m Christchurch and other places. The Oroua County Council sat to-day at Feilding. We remind home correspondents that the English mail via 'Frisco closes this evening, at 7 45. The Keady Money Store announces some special lines m seeds, including Canterbury; American and New South Wales. As they are guaranteed first class, and are sold at exceedingly cheap prices — the American at 4d per packet — a ready sale is sure to bt effected The Town Band intend to give their Christy Minstrel entertainment on Sat« urday, August 25. The members are systematically rehearsing, and a capital performance may be counted upon. . We are glad to notice that Messrs Lowes and Falloon intend to keep their horse, Mufti, m the district. They have had several very tempting offers for him, but prefer keeping the blood m Manawatu. It would be harrt to get better blood than Mufti, he being by grand old Traducer, out of a Peter Flat mare. Breeders will bear this m vitw, anil we have no doubt Multi's list will soon be full.' , A panorama is to be exhibited .at tht Foresters' Hallon Monday night entitled, •' From Ocean tQ Ocean," pr across the American Continent from New York to ' Frisco. The panorama has been doing good business elsewhere, and is certain of a good run here. The Feilding Stai violently attacks the Chinaman, Ah Hing, for what it calls" being governed by a wild desire to s fiend bis money out cf the place." It appears Ah Hing has engaged Messrs Hawkins and Son to pilot him through the Bankruptcy Court, instead of giving either of tbe Feilding lawyers a show. The Star graciously attributes^this to our local lawyers being "more experienced" than the Feildiug gentlemen. PerhHps the Star is right But really Feildine: must be jo a bad state when even a poor pbinaman can't employ an outsjde lawyer, eveu though he may be "more experienced," without being journalistically assaulted for doing so, Golden Crowns are showing a downward tendency. The retorting of the amalgam is to take place to-day, and will probably either lower or raise the value of the shares. Another old resident; of Wellington, Mr Hayward, father of the owner of the well-known horse, Orphan, died at Wairarapa a day or two ago. Instead of speaking of members' honoraria, people are now talking pf tbeir "' pauperarH," 1 ' William Davidson, general dealer, late of Wellington, has " 3lithered " to Australia, A Royal Commission has been appointed to enquire into the cause of the outbreak of fever on board the ship Oxford. The inquiry will be a most searching one. A number of the immigrants have been released from quarantine, and the patients are progressing favourably For blocking the tootpath by kneeling at Dune Hn yes^e day, m the open air services, Captain Bur ford, of the Salvation Army was tiued one shilling, without cos'a. At the inquest qn the body of Robert Mayne, who committed suipide at Mar' tinborough on Tuosday by cutting his thi oat, the verdict was suicide, while suffering under temporary insanity. The members of the Legislature visit the Terawhiti goldfield on Saturday next
