We heartilj; ccmimend to the people of Palmevston the Kurere cheese and butter factory scheme. It is a good one m every sense, and from the resolutions quoted m another column ouv readers will see the coucorn i« being started m a business* like way. Fortunately so many of 1 hose factories nro now at work m New Zealand, that the managers ofiheKarere oue do not need to buy their experience. Othei-s have bought, theirs, and the Karere people should iearn of them. This einule factor should represent a saving- of hundreds of pounds m starting the concern. Our" object just now is to urge thebusiness people of Palmerston to support the affair by taking up shares, and by inducing their friends to do tne same. What this district wants, and wants badly, is the creation of industries which would bring money into it from afar. Bushfallirip, stock-rais-ing, timbei'NCUtting, and wool"grow« iug, now represent the principal
means by which moni>y is brought into Manawatu, b>it if we go into the cheeso find butter business on a large sca'e it will mean tuning thousands ..f pounds' worth of waste milk into money, giving dairy tanners a steady supply of cash, and produc\jii; an article which •will bring money to the district. Not only so, but a well-worked, paying factory at Karore me/ins others bein^ started m different parts of Manawatu, because the market for giood cheese and butter is practically unlimited. This iv turn would cause the opening up ] of more land, the breeding of a superior class of stock, and generally sneaking benefit would accrue to all classes of the community. Consequently every one who has a stake m Palmerstou should take a few shares to give the industry a start; for when once it is started, and proves a paying concern, as we have no doubt it will, capitalists will be quite ready enough to put their money into other factories. No doubt the country settlers will also, according to their means, tak° up shares as well as supply milk, and m order -to make the payments as light as possible, and interest a large number of persons, it would be wise for those settlers who take up shares to pay their calls m milk. This would prevent the necessity of their paying cash out of pocket, which we know is with many an important matter. We have great hope of this Karere factory being a success, and the precursor of many others on this Coast. We would urge the promoters to exercise the strictest economy m starting the affair, and to get the best possible machinery and employes, and we have no fear of the rsst. Our principal regret is that the concern ia being started just at the time. when Mr J. Monrad, whose knowledge and experience would be so yaluable, js leaving the district.
