The Case of Angelique Therasse.
The case of Angelique Therasse was discussed m the House yesterday. The Public Petitions Commit tee reported on her petition that she had sustained grievous wrong by an unjust sentence, and that the Government should giant hex* L6O by way of compensation, and a further sum of L 5 for payment of her legal expenses.- — Mr Conqlly said that the case was still under the most careful investigation. The. mantle was about to be sent to Christchurch for identification. If the mantle was identified the Go* vernmeD.t would then be. prepared to favorably consider the Committee's recommendation, but he did not wish the House to think that the young woman's character at all suffered. There was evidence from Christchurch that she and the two witresses she had were people of weKU known bad character. She had been a prostitute living m a brothel m Christchurch, and had left that town to avoid compliance with a certaHi Act. She might, however, be inno» cent m this particular case, and if so the Government would do wbatever was just. Several members bitterly denounced Mr CVmolly's conduct m making such statements and condemned the working of the police force. It was resolved to refer the report to Government. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, Sept 4.
