Two Attempted Suicides.
"We hav 5 - to record m this iisne two attempted suicides at Palmerton North. / The firat occurred m the vicinity , o| Broad street yesterday afternoon, the unfortunate who attempted his life being an elderly man named \ Thomas Nelson, a Scotchman, and who was recently working at the Kairakau mill. He lias been employed . logging u.p on some land ben longing to Mr Edwards, a resin dent of that part of the town. He was employed at the work for a few weeks^ and his employer gave him a shakedown m the back part of the premises. ; He was paid off last week, and took to drinking, which he kept tip ever since, leaving his home for some days. Yesterday, morning he returned, m the absence of Mr Edwards, and went into his room. In the afternoon he • cams, out, and hplding up a bottle which it was aftei'wardß found contained laudanum, said to Mrs Edwards, , "Sere's the last of me." She said, « f Ob, what shall Ido ?" "Bo nothing," said Nelson. '• I must go ! for the doctor," said Mm Edwards, | whereupon Nelson said he would run j away if she did so. He did, and Mrs Edwards then got Mr Gdodisflbn's .assistance. Subsequently Br Marriner. was obtained, "and he set the stomach pump tc work, at once, and Nelson is now, comparatively speaking, all right. ; V Tne other case was that of a man named Henry John Dingleday, a tailor, and who reoentlj '^became bankrupt. It appears this morning he obtained at a place of business a packet of vermin destroyer. Hill's Vermin- killer, and taking it home at once took a heavy dose. Having done so, he with great deliberation wrote out a letter stating that be bad taken poison of his own free-will, and went to the police station, handing the document to Constable Gillespie, who was cleaning his horse m the yard. Thp officer at .once saW the maa had taken poison, as be began tottering. He therefore sprang upon his horse and rode to Br Marriner's, but that gentleman being away from home, the constable got the stomach pump, and rode to Mr Hoskings' house, where the doctor, was engaged. Br Marriner at once proceeded to the station and employed the stomach pump, thus emptying the man's stomach and saving his life. He is doing fairly well, and no serious results are an* ticipted m either case, thanks to the promptitude of the parties whose names we have mentioned.
