We learn that this young lady has Bco"ed the highest record m the district so far, and while she is to be congratulated on her mental attainments, I she also reflects credit upon her teacners. Society m Paris is mvc 1 * agitated just now on account of the elopement I ot a Northern prince with a young and beautiful Italian enntessa, under the age of sixteen, whose father is an officer of high rank, and whose duties take him a great daal away from home. The fugitives left Florence at night, and proceeded to Paris, where they took up their quarters at one of the largest hotels m the Champs Elyseeg, aad were | soon surrounded by an army of ! mil'iijers, jewellers, and the re .t of them. However, as soon as the hotel bill was presented (he prince was unable |to meet it ; and »s, m addition to this he had lost heavily at the table*, he haJ recourse to the device of ordering some very costiy jewels from au unsuspecting tiadesr. n, which he sold on the same day for al uit one-half their price. This happened to come to the ears of the jeweller, who at once communicated with the dice ; and as comp'aints bad reached them from other quarters, bis highness was at once arrested. The j commissary who went to the hotel for this purpose was met there by a colleague m plaip clothes cent from the Italian Embassy, together with the ! mother of the fair con tessa, who had followed her erring daughter all the way from Italy. To everybody s surprise the prince was -released after a few hours' detention ; the mother of the girl, it is rumored, paid all the claims against htm m order to avoid the scandal which a public expose would no doubt have entailedThe Feilding Star publishes the following remarks which are equally applicable to this district:— "The demand for labor cf all kinds is steadily increasing m and near Feilding, and wages are rising m proportion. As a natural consequence we may expect an influx ot' "all sorts and conditions ot men" m search oi work, attracted by the high rates. As a word of caution to those who may be tempted to come, we may state that the only class of men who will have the slightest chance of doing vreil must be good bushmen, sawmill h*nos, pick and shovel men, or laborers. Skilled labor of any kind is not much m t'pnaand, and of carpenters' and builders work there is only sufficient to keep the tradesmen alreaiy settled here m full work, ijolei's men are able and willing to do hard manual labor, they are not required here. There is no work for what are called " genteel employees" on the Manchester Block. For those who can fill the con di tons we have named, this is the best place m the Colony. Many miles of road making have been, and are about to te let by contract, the sawmillers are short of hands, the shearing season has commenced, and plenty of other work m offering." It would be to the advantage of all purcha sera of Drapery and Clothiug to mspect the Goods just opened at M'Dowell Bros., Cash Warehouse We cau confidently say the prices are aston ishingly' low, and for range of choice the stock cannot be equalled m the district. — A dvt. ' ■. ■■ ■ ■ . ; As showing the advancement of our Colonial fu'lustrie?, 'i^e are pleased to state that the goods produced by the Kaipaoi woollen mills are attracting great attention m Australia.
