The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 24, 1883. A PUBLIC SCHOOL AT TERRACE END.
We understand it is probable that an additional school will shortly be provided for Palmerston. The pro* posal to establish, one at Terrace End has now been before the Board ever since that body became an institution, and the overcrowded state of the present school near the Square affords conclusive evidence that, the Board will act wisely m at once tak* ing steps to comply with the . desire of the residents. There is now an attendance of about 400— or consip derabiy' mpue than ftie school is cal» culated to hold ; according to the Board's regulations on the subject. In consequence of this a large number of scholars are now going to private schools, the attendance at which is estimated at about 120 ; and it is also estimated that at least 100 children of school age are not attending anj school at all. The Tenant Inspector, M!r m here at present, and we understand that ff fyile he found that many were not attending, he 4id not see that it would be just to ask parents £p send children to a school already over* crowded. The site upon which it is proposed that the new schoolhouse should be erected is situated near the Terrace? between Gray and Broad streets, and has been handed /ta the Board as a free gift. . It is probably as good a site as it is possible to find m the Borough, being high and dry, and away from the railway line. We may menlbion, m connection with this subject, that the attendance at the Palmerston school is now larger than at any school m the educational district, the Wanganui schools not excepted.
