Reuter'a Telegrams. ; ..Melbourne, Nov. 3. The first day's races of the ."Vic- ;- toria Raping Club's Spring Meeting took' place to-day at Fiemington. The attendance on the course was very larger and included Sir William/ Robinson, Governor of South Australia, and Sir George Strahan, Governor of Tasmania. The Marquis of Normanby was not, ow* ing to a family bereave meut. The weather was fine ' during the day, though sultry. The following are the results of the various events :— Melbourne Stakes, li miles. Mabibybnong Plate, 5 furlongs. lolanthe ... ... ... 1 King's Own ... ... ... 2 David ... .... ... ... 3 A fair start was made, lolanthe and Bargo being the first to get away, King of Gipsies, Venetia, and David following* At the tan crossing The Broker was prominent, the others being together m a bunch. lolanthe was leading oh entering the straight, with Bargo close up, but lolanthe came with a, rush and increased her lead, and romped home an easy winder by several lengths Eighteen horses started. The following nine horses started :— Archie, Hurricane, Little Sister, Martini-Henri, Napier, Off Color, Sardius, Sign >r, aud Yenet. LittleJSister rushed te the front at the start aud led^ past the stand, followed by Sardius, Off Colour, Martini Henry Napier, Hurricane, and Vernet. Archie who started badly, was last. At the first turn Little Sister was leading, with Mirtioi-'Henry well up, Archie being, still last. The pace was now terrific. . At the bridge Off Color ran to second place and Sardius and Signor were 1 jading Martini Henry. The favorite was still m the rear. This order was observed along the back of the. course. At the abattoirs Little Sister led the van by three lengths Sardius had deprived Off Color of second place and Martini-Henri was well up on Off Color's quarter. Archie now endeavoured to get up. On rounding the turn Sardius deprived Little Sister of the lead, and Martini-Henri made a forward move. As thej entered the straight Sardius led th? field by two lengths. MartininHenri bsing next followed by Off Colour. At Jbhe distance' Martini- Henry shot to the front and came to the post an easy winner by two lengths from Sardius, Hurricane third, Off Colour fourth, Archie fifth under severe punishment, followed by Napier, Signor, Little Sister, and Vernet m the order named. Time, 2m in 39sec; the fastest on record m the world. The favourite, Archie, was hooted by the public as he came to the weighing paddock. Corburg Stakes, 1 mile and a furlong Paul ... „ 1 Frying Pan ... ' ... ... 2 The Joker ... 3 Twenty-six horses started, and it was a good race. Paul won easily by 2£ lengths. Time, lmin 53secs. Just before the start for the Melbourne Stakes Delusion and the Plunger were very restive, and cannoned with great violence, Delusion being killel by the collision. The jockeys of both horses were thrown and badly cut.
