The full Court has granted a new trial m the divorce suit Homey v Homey and Solomon,on the ground that the damages are excessive, and that the co-respondent has been el- j lowed the right of striking the jury list. In the Assembly last night the ! Minister of Lands moved the second reading of the Land Bill, and occupied four hours and a quarter m his speech. The Postmaster-General has received a communication from the manager of the Cable Company that the request of the Conference, that the charge for Press messages should be red aced 15 per cent, cannot be complied with. A "warrant has been issued for the arrest of John Biscarden Duff, Deputy Registrar-General, charging him with having embezzled the sum of £679, the property of the Government. H.M.S. Dart has returned to harbor after an extended cruise among the Islands, during which investigations were made into the alleged murder of white men. Frequent thunderstorms, with rain, have occurred nearly all over the country. Melbourne, Nov. 8. At the meeting of the Irish National Convention a telegram was received from Mr Parnell wishing cucsess. D. O'Doherty was elected president. A long series of resolutions were passed deploring the present condition of Ireland, pledg* ing the Convention to assist m trying to ameliorate it,adopting a petic tion to the Imperial Parliament m favor of local government m Ireland, and declaring that the coercion policy would be a fruitful source of disorder and crime. The next convention ia fixed to be held m Sydney next year. A steamboat collision occurred on the Yarra between the steamer Southern Cross and paddle-tug Rescue. The latter was much I damaged. ! The steamer Bodondo was going ten or twelve knots at the time the accident occurred to her. Captain Johnston, who was m charge, states i that the red light of the lower light* house was open at the time she struck. The weather was fine, with light southerly wind. The Government intend to float the principal portion of the new lean m June. The National Agricultural Society's show has opened. There is a splendid display m. all the seci tions. A fresh summons against the sweep promoters has been issued by the police. |
