A special meeting of the Phoenix Lodge of Good Templars will be held at the Good Templars' Hall, Church street, on Tuesday evening next, for the election- and installation of officers for the ensuing term. We regret to record the death this | morning of Mrs Leary, senior, the mother of our esteemed , townsmen, Messrs J. P. and R. Leary, at the ripe age of 73 years. The deceased lady had for years past been feeling the increasing infirmities of old age, and had been confined to her house and grounds for the past two years, hei weakness necessitating car&iui attention from her relatives. However, about half-past three this morning, just as the day was begining to dawn, her spirit passed peacefully away. The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon.at 3 o'clock. 'W e learn £hat itfis very probable a Lodge of the Ancient Q refer of Druids will shortly be established m Palmers** ton. This orler is a friendly society, similar m its main features as to benefits $c. to the Foresters, Oddfellows and kindred societies, and claims for itself a very ancient origin. Since its recent introduction into the colony it has made considerable headway, and it has been some watt surprising that up to the present there ha» been no effort to establish a branch m Palmerston. We i understand that Mr Walter Bishop, who is a Past Arch Druid , will arrive m l'alberston ne?t v.eeV and will then take 'an opportunity of explaining the constitution 'and objects of the <>rder.' r? - The : Druidi of old are said to nave taken delight m planting oaks, and m these modern days' ttie Arch-Druid Mr Bishop has devoted his energies to plauting Lodges. VTe' 'observe that a lodge recently 'established paid him the ; compliment of naming itself after him. - : We are glad td learn .tii.at Mr Linton's condition qoutinuea to ituproyfe. Several alterations are made m Mr G. M. Snelßon's advertisement of articles, on sale at his mart. We direct special attention to Mr D. M. George's advertisement which appears m this issue. Mr George announces that he has just opened out a second shipment of new and fashionable iroods which arrived per louic. liy the same steamer, Mis^ K«ne, a dressmaker who was spt-cully engaged m London, also arrived, and Mr George announces that she will be assisted by one of the best local dressmakers. m this connection we observe that Mr George is also advertising for apprentices and improves. ** In another column Mr J. The* Volunteer Band performed last night, on the Square. They show considerable efficiency, considering that most «»f the performers are new players. There was a good attendance of tht public. The dangers to which drunken men are perpetually exposing themselves are verj great indeed. Yesterday, at midday, a man was riding out of town, and was so dmnk that he had no command of his horse, which grazed about the j roads as it pleased, the rider rolling on j the saddle all tbe time as if he were cer* tain to come off. — Last evening, a Paluierston resident who was riding down the Fox ton line found about a mile and a balf from town, a Scandinavian lying drunk actually across one of the rails. The man had crawled up a slight rise on tbe line, and had the train come along vrou'd most certainly have been killed. This was only three- quarters of an hour before the train would pass | He was promptly placed inside a gate to j sleep off his liquor, out of harm's way. He adked the person who put him m tbe paddock if be would "come and wake him m the morning !" ! f; * Tbe Masterton vecple are wide awake. They have offered to take up £20,00 worth of shares m the Wellington Woollen Co., if the works are established there. The way to secure substantial and permanent progresss is to employ population m manufactures, a fact which our Masterton friends fully understand.. More power to tbem. The following cable message has been received trom London m Sydney : — " It is rumoured m high official circles that Major General Scratchley has been offered the post of her Majesty's High Commissioner for the "Western Pacific, with increased powers, vice Sir Arthur Gordon, resigned. General Scratchley has nut finally accepted the appointment because the principal seat of the Goverameut is not yet arranged ; but it is believed that he will accept it, and leave for Australia m March." Mr F. J. Jones, " the Great Leather King," opened m Palmerston on Tues* day last, with an immense stock of boots and shoes, and during the week he has transacted a large amount of business. For the benefit of those who have not yet paid him a visit, we may mention that his location is near the Bank of New Zealand, m Mr W. Dixon's premises, The Chairman of the Manawatu County Couqcil stated at last meeting that during the interview with the Minister of Public Works relative to the tramway, the deputation learnt that instead of the cum of £5,000 being available for the use of the council on the applications sent m June last, there will be only a sum of something like £1.500, and with that information he (the chairman) had fortunately saved the council from entering into any further contrac s until the question had been again seriously considered- . The Chairman of the' Manawatu County Council evidently appreciates tbe honor which has been conferred upon him by re-election to that important position. At the conclusion of the meeting on Wednesday, he entertained the Councillors, officers and representatives of the Press at a banquet at W byte's Hotel. The usual toasts were duly honored, and the festive proceedings continued till about midnight. The Marton paper states that the money applied for under tbe Roads and Bridges Construction Act, by the Kiwitea Road Board, amounting to £3,473, has, we understand, been granted by the Government, and will be available as soon as the requirements of the Act have been carried out. If the money is voted for by the ratepayers the following, roads are to be constructed: — Sinclair's-line, Wilsons-l ine, and. Perry and Mcßeth'i,--line, • ! ■- - . It appears that Government are not to,. be induced to work an unproftuble speculation. At last meeting of , the Manawatu County Council, Ore Thynhe and Bull, who waited upon Government m refeience, to th.c tramway, reported that the Government were firm m their refusal to work the line oF.tramwayi but grouted the request to allow the tramway to be connected with,. the railway line. , Boiling stock woald be supplied by the Government (excepting perhaps passenger, cars) any detention beyond the usual demurrage time to be met by a charge of one shilling per truok per day. The report acknowledged the assistaace received by the duputation from Mr Wilson, M.H.R. It is stated m the Bendigo Adver. tiser that Kate Kelly, the sister of the notorious - bushranger who held the north-eastern district m such a state of terror three years ago, is at present m the Beechworth Hospital, suffering from consumption, from which she is not expected te recover, ' ' At Mr Snelson's stock sale to-day, stock showed a marked improvement m value, We notice Mr F. T. Collins has had i built a capital spring cart, suitable for butchering, with which he intends to increase his suburban a.nd country trad*. It was built by Mr Stratford. We presume that similar action will be taken bj the Palmerston Borough Council at its' next meeting, The. first tative female lawyer known m India has been admitted to : a local court m Madras,, to practise as a private pleader m magisterial cases > v he is the wife of a native .Obrißtian miesionarj , and has ..'.. ieritipply , adopted , .
