The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. MONDAY, DEC. 10, 1883. THE RAILWAY ALTERATIONS.
— • — The railway alterations the Square have at last begun. Mr George Nye and a few men this morning made a beginning, their first work be ng to take down the chimney of the old Post Office, with a view to its removal. We may explain that when the alterations are effected there will be several lines of shunts, the farthest of which will run down the Foxton line as far as Mrs Dungan's residence. The footpath along the same line will run as far towards the Square as the corner of Mr Batt's house, and will then cut in a direct line to Mr Linton's section, running along the present side of his offices, which will become a Square corner. The Square road will then be crossed at another angle, and the footpaths will run along one side of a 66-feet road which will lie between the goods shed and the Square. The goods shed will be removed from its present position some distance nearer to Mr Linton's offices, and will be placed on a line with the present Square fence, the chain-wide road mentioned above separating it from the Square. The old Post Office is to be removed to the vacant section adjoining the Police Station, as also will be the stationmaster's house, and the two will be made into one dwelling for the stationmaster, the present site of the stationmaster's house being required for station purposes. When completed the station accommodation will be considerably increased. At the same time, we must express our firm conviction that the station itself is altogether in the wrong place, and that instead of being where it is it should be removed either up beyond the Palmerston Brewery on Rangitikei Line or down near Fitzherbert bridge. As it is the railway line running through the principal street of the town is an eyesore and
a danger to the lives of the inhabitants, and instead of the Square being a tning of beauty it promises to be the most unsightly part of the town. However, it is merely a question of time, for we are convinced that sooner or later the line will be taken up and the station placed out of the town.
