THE TRIUMPH ENQUIRY.
THIS DAY. Special to Times. Per Press Association* Auckland, This day. The Triumph enquiry resumed today. The crown prosecutor said a new Phase m the case had arisen m the fact of the steamer being Sotted off and brought into Auckland. He recalled. The Chief Officer who deposed that since the date of last sitting he was em* ployed assisting m the operations to get the vessel off, which were successful, and the vessel now lies m Auckland harbor. No external aid or apparatus were used to lift the ship. Beyond pumping nothing was done except taking out the cargo was lightening her The pumping had to be kept vu { > nearly all the way into the harbor. The vessel has a strong list to starboard that bhows she must ha?e a lot of caiyo m the forehold on that side besides water. Had the^e steps been taken at first he believed she would have been got off &% readily. This closed the case for the Collector of Custom-'. Mr H«3keth said the course he proposed to take on behalf of the captain was that he proposed to lead m evidence to prove thi cause of the captain going to Bleep and sh uld call evidence to rebut what had been several times suggested by the Crown, though never directly, that the Captain was the worse for drink. He had witnesses who would prove tbii to be untrue. The Captain had for som* niehts previously been suffering from an affliction and he had tbe evidence of a local medical gentlecsan to prove Shat he had been consulted by Captain Brotherton for the same affliction. Henry Parker, Tide Surveyor and Boarding Officer for the Customs, said he was on board the Triumph two minutes before she left, and conversed with the Captain. He saw nothing unusual m his manner. He did not appear sut« fering from drink. The enquiry is still proceeding.
