RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before Messrs Snelsou, Waldegrave, Pratt, and Russell, J.P's.) LABCENY. ' Henry and Charlotte Mitchell were charged on the information of Gr. Boyd with having stolen an oven , valued at 50s, belonging to him, on March 15, 1883. j Constable Gillespie prosecuted, and Mr Haukins defended. lx. Boyd gave evideuce to the effect that the oveu m question was placed m his outhouse, and that about last Mai he missed it ; from a recent conversation with Mrs Coleman,learned it was at Mitchell's, went there and saw it, and claimed it ; she said he could take it away, that they bought it for 10s from his missus ; had declined to sell it to Mrs Mitchell ; on speaking to Mits chell he said, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Boyd carried it m a bag to Mrs Coleman's, and the latter called him to take it away ; had not authorised his housekeeper, who was known as Mrs Boyd, to take it away, or sell it. Mr Hawkins severely cross-ex-amined the witness. Emma Doige formerly Mrs Landes, and known as Mrs Boyd, deposed to having missed the oven ; did not sell or give it away. In cress -examination this witness deposed that she was brought up from Wellington on a warrant charging her with having stolen the oven ; had lived 7 years with Boyd ; had disposed of various things at times. Constable Gillespie deposed that yesterday the female defendant said she bought tb,e oven for 10s from Mrs Boyd, but had not paid for it. After consultation the Bench de~ cided to dismiss the case, giving de« fendants the benefit of the doubt. Also, plaintiff could recover civilly the value of the oven from defend* ant. THIS AFTERNOON. (Before Messrs Snelson and Walde* grave, J.P's.) A case of perjury against Mrs Coleman, preferred by G. Boyd, arising out of a civil oase heard on Dec, 20, was adjourned.
