St. Patrick's Church.

The newly-appointed pastor of this Hhiu-ch, the Rev. Father M'Manus, began his duties yesterday at St. | Patrick's Church, and made a most favorable impression, the rev. gentleman being an eloquent preacher, and m every way adapted for successfully prosecuting his duties m the district. In his address at Mass the rev. Father said he hoped his stay m Manawatu would be pleasant both to his congregation and him* self. He did not know of course how long he would be allowed to remain, but while here he would do his best to promote the spiritual well-being of his flock. He fully impressed upon them the necessity of sending | the children regularly to Sunday i School, as they were not taught religion at the day schools, and then proceeded to deliver an eloquent discourse upon the necessity of being at all times prepared for death. At Vespers there was a very large atj tendance, a great number being de--1 sirous at the earliest opportunity of hearing their new clergyman, when the rev. gentleman preached an eloquent and forcible sermon on religion, its importance and influence, and the necessity of following its teachings strictly and unwaveringly. At the evening service Mrs Macquarrie presided at the organ. "We under- J stand Father M'Manus will permanently reside m Palmerston, and that the handsome new Presbytery erected through the energy of Father Carew will be furnished at once.
