Collision between the Jane Douglas and Tui.
We extract the following from yesterdiy's Minawatu Herald:— Some excitement toob place at the wharf on th* arrival of the Jane Douglas this morning. The Tni, which bad arrifed shortly before, was moored at No. 1 berth, near the sheep pen. Wben the Jane Douglas arrived, a line was pat out from the bow, the Captain. iotending to nwiMg the ship round on it, and then steam iuto the wharf wich her head down the river. However, just as she swung round, the yesael was : caught < by the funous tvV gale" blowing, and- the strain being too great the line parted, and the vessel drifted :dowa on the Tui, ber bowfrstriking that vessel on her starboard quarter, and scraping along the side of the latter, tearing away two stanchions, the main and- foremast shrouds, and doing some other slight damage. Captain Pope and his men did all they could to lessen the resnlt of the collision, which was seen to be ineviW able after the rope broke on the Douglas, and rapidly passed another line banded over trpin that ship on to the after " bits " on the ,Tui, but owing to the enormous strain, the Jane being broadside on, and a strong tide flowing up the river, this. line also parted, and the Jane went flyin* up stream ominously near the dolphins. to the southward of the/ wharf. Thece were fortunately escaped, and the vessel haviag swung on her anchor, was brought down to the berth the skipper originally intended to take. The damage to the Jane wa9 trifling, mainly consisting of the displacement of her bow-sprit and figurehead, and the accident, which, %» was remarked, "might have been worse," will cost but little to repair.
