The Selwyn Seat.
Per Press Association. Christchurch, This day. Mr Wakefield addressed the electors of Selwyn last night. Beginning with a retrospect of his political experience, he gave the hissiory of his opposition to Sir Geo. Grey and his connection with the party at present m power. He then disclosed the secret of the Government opposition to his candidature at Inangahua. He had noticed a great falling oft m the administration after the secession of Sir John Hall, since which time there had been no good or honest Government m New Zealand, On its becoming known that he intended to contest Inangahua he received a telegram from jfVom Wellington asking what his platiorm was to be. He had replied that his platform was the same asTit had always been* leaving it to Government to say whether theirs yras altered or not, He had then been asked if he required ; assistance, I to which he replied that he wouldwait ] tillhe had consulted his constituents.: i Government at once 'took this to
mean that he was no supporter of theirs, and put Mr Shaw into the field against him. He had no con* fidence m the present Government and he- would go to Wellington as a supporter of the opposition. He then proceeded to explain his political views m detail.
