The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. THURSDAY, JAN. 17, 1884.

The Canterbury people are usually held up as models to the rest of the colony, but they can scarcely claim to be such m the matter of gratitude to the memory of public men, The foresight, enterprise, and energy of William Sefton Moorhouse brought about the piercing of Lyttelton Hills, and the construction of a railway from Christchurch to the port. From this point the rapid progress of Canterbury was assured. When Mr Moorhouse died about two years ago, A subscription was got up to erect a

monument to his merno-y^ The Cominitte'e -m met a fovr days ago, and the Chairman (Mr Ollivier) reported that " the cost of the statue would be £950 or £1000. W ith re " gard to the funds at their disposal, £792 had been promised, out of which £451 were actually banked. He had issued a circular some time ago, urging the necessity for further activity among subscribers, and he was glad to say that this had actually produced two £5 notes J" Such appears to have been the result of the appeal to the wealthy classes of Canterbury, who owe their wealth to Mr Moorhouse's political action. Still it has been so from tha beginning, and will be so to the end. It is often said that when men reach the summit of fame ithey kick away the ladder by which they ascended. It is equally true that after public men have served their country or the place they live m they are soon forgotten.
