The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. SATURDAY, JAN. 19, 1884. THE WARD DIVISIONS.

In last night's issue our contemporary writes that a great amount of indignation exists regarding the pro-posed-division of the Borough into swards, owing to a J.P. having been asked to send the petition to the Government. The simple facts are that Messrs Milverton and Abrahams, the promoters of the petition, waited a few weeks ago upon Mr Russell, J.P., and asked him. to forward the petitfon. They were asked why the petition was not handed to the Borough Council, but replied that when the matter was laid before the Council m a letter, a hostile spirit was shown, and urged that as the matter had originated altogether apart from the Council, and was opposed by some members of that body, it would be wiser and better, and more likely to secure the end dasired, for a J.P. to forward it. Owing to these representations Mr Russell consented to forward the petition, and did so. A day or two ago Mr Russell received a reply from the Government, requesting him to forward the proposed boundaries.but this he declined to do on his own responsibility. He therefore waited on Mr Snelson, the Mayor, yesterday morning, and a scheme of ward division, entirely embodying Mr Snelson's views, was adopted after a long conversation, Mr Snelson being entirely satisfied with the proposed division, which m fact emanated from himself. These facts will explain to the ratepayers that there has been nothing underhand nor discourteous to the Borough Council or Mayor; but that the pi-omoters merely considered it expedient not to hand the petition over to the Council after the manner it treated the question when it was brought up ; although, as we have already shown, every courtesy has been show the Mayor, and he has kindly agreed to write a letter assenting to the proposed ward divisions. These facts speak for themselves, and show how much indignation (?) exists, and what grounds ■ there are for it.
