The Daily Times. The oldest Manawatu journal: Established 1875. SATURDAY, JAN. 26. 1884.

Accompanied by Councillor West, a representative of this journal the other day visited the Botanical Pioad drain. We found evidence of a very large expenditure of money, and but little to show for it. Owing to a stoppage for repairs, a lot of the water which should have gone down the drain was running down the Foxton line. About half a mile down the road, we came upon the place where the Borough men are working. It appears that the . drain is at this point some six or seven feet deep, and a wood floor and two sides about two feet high were put m. Naturally the sides have fallen m from the top.and this may be seen going on just now ; m fact, the weight of the material thrown out of the drain was quite sufficient to make the sides fall m. It has since then been determined to box m the drain, and that work is. being done now at a very heavy cost, both as regards timber and labour. This boxing-in will be carried up until a sufficient level is reached to prevent the sides giving way. We examined the mouth of the drain, and found it to be m fair order, but Mr Parkes informs us that only m very wet weather does the water run out of the drain into the lagaon, as usually it soaks into the earth some distance above the mouth. It is quite evident that a very large sum of money has been wasted over the drain m question.
